Really nice trail for basic and experienced hikers alike. But wear proper gear. Boots, prepare for wind and hiking poles are helpful climbing the scree. We had gloves and hats in July and were happy to have them. The base of the crater is at 950’ and the rim is 1640’. That 650’ climb covers .25 miles up volcanic scree and sand. This is the only challenging part (but don’t underestimate how hard it is, every step forward is a little slide back. We didn’t do the hike as mapped. The rim is almost exactly 2 mi. in circumference - great walk around the rim with a bit of elevation gain and loss as you go around. We climbed and descended the south side. The hike around the rim was cool. The total miles where closer to 5.7. Better hike than we expected with great views across the caldera north toward the thermal springs.
