This hike begins with a solid 10-15 minute incline at the outset. If you're not in shape, it may require you to stop and take a breather a time or two but I imagine many will be able to power through. Once you reach the top, the most difficult part of the hike is over.

You have a choice with Hversfjall. You can chill out up top and observe the crater from the initial viewpoint or you can continue onward, completing the hike around the entire rim. I encourage the latter. The rim itself is quite wide and it's a pretty moderate hike with some rolling inclines but nothing like the initial ascent. The views of the crater are great but Hversfjall also serves as a wonderful vantage point for the surrounding territory, offering looks down toward Lake Myvatn and back in the direction of the Krafla area.

One thing to keep in mind: the wind. Gusts can really pick up depending upon which part of the crater you're traversing. Just keep a solid grasp of any loose jackets, gloves, hats, or phones and you should be all set.
