Tips

Stroll the world-famous beach or the adjacent Kalakaua Avenue Early Hawaiians named the 1.5-mile stretch of beachside land Waikiki-or "spouting water"-because it was once a marshland created by mountain-fed streams and gushing spring waters. Despite its swampy sites and smells, the area was still a favorite south shore retreat for Hawaiians who loved its beautiful sand. The beaches are still as stunning. But the marshlands are long gone, much to the delight of visitors who flock here from around the globe. Whether you're strolling down the beach or along Kalakaua Avenue, you'll find Waikiki a wonderland of sights, sounds and fragrant smells. This is a destination that demands exploring on foot since there are just so many delightful, delicious diversions tucked between hotels and even within them. And you can give each as much or little time as you'd like. Pop in to join a hula lesson. Relax with lunch looking out at the surf. People watch as you stroll along the beach. Window shop and stop for coconut ice cream. While the scene is often bustling, you can discover Waikiki at any pace you desire.

Slather on the sunscreen, don your flip-flops and board shorts, grab a water bottle and be flexible with your schedule! There's just so much going on in this world-famous resort area that you're certain to stumble upon pleasant surprises that will lure you away from your schedule. You may even want to pack a beach towel in case you're inclined to jump in the ocean to cool off!

Is this supposed to be a “drive” as mentioned in the title? If so, it can not be completed using the AllTrails recording due to a section of one-way street on Lewers - there is no left hand turn onto Lewers Street from Kalia Road. Anyway, this makes for a better walk than a drive.

Easy walk, great for viewing the beach and people watching. But it is still a city street, so it is kinda dirty and a lot of homeless along the way.

Walking

Did this as a leisurely morning walk and helps when getting there to get your bearings and know where different things are to come back too. Actually walked back in the water on the beach which was nice to take in the views and watch all the activity on the water.

There are lots of sights and sounds along the Beach drive. People watching is pretty fun and the variety of stores and eateries make this a neat night walk.

It's a fun walk through the main shopping district and restaurants. There are pretty views of the Palm trees lining the Beach so you will get some nice sunset photos if you time it right.

Scenic driving

Very heavy, slow moving traffic. Better to walk along than drive. Very famous and beautiful, but extremely crowded beaches all along the drive.

First to Review

Walk the entire Waikiki Beach early morning to miss the crowds or at sunset, especially if you like to people watch - you can walk all the way to Kapiolani Park from the Hilton – best spot to be in Waikiki in the summer is the Kapahulu Groin, enjoy watching bodyboarders, surfers, volleyball, and of course even though it says not to jump off, watching people jump off the groin. Great place to eat and chill is Duke's and there is always something happening along the beach. We rented a surfboard at the end of the day for $5 for an hour, and that was plenty of fun; during the summer, the waves off Waikiki are symmetrical, long and rolling - if you can stand up, you can get a nice long ride. Fireworks every Friday at the Hilton, definitely a great show. If you are on Oahu, Waikiki is the place for a stroll. Plenty of adventures around the rest of the island too!
