after turning off puupia trail it is extremely muddy, but you just gotta go slow. the river and the small waterfalls at the bottom are well worth it, it was so beautiful.

once you turn off the main trail I wouldn't consider it moderate anymore. super muddy and slippery.. very steep parts. trail not marked well. we made it but it wasn't enjoyable.

I wanted to write another review that gave all the details of this hike. This was overall an amazing hike with beautiful waterfalls. The hike starts easy with a steady incline. You’ll then take a sharp right and go straight down, if you continue to go straight then you’ll end up at a viewpoint with no waterfalls. Once you get to the bottom of the steep n muddy hill, you’ll take a right and follow that trail. There will be multiple times when you’ll have to river cross to get to the trail on the other side, but remember to kinda stay along the river (at one point I got kinda lost and accidentally started going up Manoa Middle Ridge). When I reached the first small waterfall, it was extremely hard to get up it because it was raining. I’m a very experienced/avid hiker and I do not suggest doing this hike in the rain, it was a stupid decision. After climbing up the side of the smaller waterfall, you reach another bigger beautiful waterfall (10-15 ft). If you want to continue, there’s a trail that involves ropes to the left of the waterfall. After continuing on, we reached another 10 foot waterfall that had a HUGE waterfall behind it. We climbed up the 10 foot waterfall (there was another way btw and you don’t need to climb up a second waterfall to get to the biggest waterfall). The biggest waterfall was raging, it was amazing. You could also continue and go to the top of the biggest waterfall, but I didn’t because I was very tired at this point. I do not suggest doing this hike in the rain even as an experienced/avid hiker. Although the waterfalls were raging, it was not worth going in the rain. There were many times where I could’ve slipped and easily hurt myself. Please do this hike when it’s dry if you want to make it back to the biggest fall. This hike is completely different when it’s wet so please don’t go when it rains! It’s extremely dangerous because it’s super easy to slip, and Hawaii has a big flash flood problem that most tourists don’t know about. Please be cautious. If you have any questions, you can DM me on Instagram @anastasiadavid

I did this trail when it was raining and it was wayyyyyyy harder than doing it dry. It was 100% worth it though because the falls were flowing like crazy. It was very sketchy though so always be careful

Love this trail. I removed most of the red yarn yesterday and replaced it with pink tags. Just wanted to post an update so no one was looking for red yarn anymore. A hiker who said she lived nearby mentioned to me that two people had to be helicoptered out (1 death and 1 injury) trying to get to the 4th waterfall. Not sure how far back that is past the main waterfalls, but per her advice she recommended not doing that and asked I post it to AllTrails.

Great trail. Took me just under an hour to go from the trail head, to the 3rd waterfall. And a little less than that to get back. It’s a pretty simple hike. There’s a small stretch where the trails connect that has a rope for you to use when climbing down. You’re not “rappelling” down it. Apparently people don’t know what actual rappelling is. But I can see how it would be difficult with a dog. IG @millerm5

Beautiful day for this hike! Easy to get off trail, recommend sticking to the All Trails recording. Really muddy and not much water flow at the larger falls but still extremely pretty, lots of lush foliage! Overall awesome hike

Great trail... I would put this somewhere between moderate and hard only because of the steep drop/climb along the trail. Wear the right shoes it’s very muddy and you’ll have to cross the stream a few times over the slick rocks. Wouldn’t bring children or dogs that you’d eventually have to carry. Trail isn’t clearly marked after a couple miles... someone did us all a favor by marking it with red yarn.

Not sure why some people said it wasn’t impressive. Maybe they didn’t go back to the last waterfall? It was great! This might be a top 5 hike for me. Felt like I was in The Jungle Book or The Secret Garden. There is one short hard part that is very steep for about 10 minutes. Other than that it’s smooth sailing. Would definitely go again! Oh and yes. Definitely a muddy hike. I’d bring a little extra water and a towel to wipe down afterwards. Shady the whole way.

I loved this trail and we had a lot of fun doing it! Make sure to have the app with the map (it works offline too if you favorite the hike) because the trail is not marked. You will see a hidden steep decline with a rope that can be a bit challenging. At the bottom you will cross the water and see some steps going up. When you finish them you will see a little house on the other side of the water, cross it again and continue to your left. The waterfall was really nice and we were able to swim in it, definitely worth it. Took us 2.5 hours for 3.6 miles. Also, you will guarantee get completely muddy from head to toe.

The trail’s not well marked once into it a mile, but by downloading this app we were able to stay one course. This trail is NOT good for large dogs as there’s a significant climbing not safety navigable by pets up or down the slope. We completed this hike with our two kids (11 & 9) and another family with similar age kids. It was a blast for all. Until the main description above the trail is 4.2mi total out and back, so bring water and a snack to enjoy at the falls.

Anti climactic, lot of hiking through over grown trail. Get to a tiny pool with small waterfall, can climb up to get to the second one, but overall not going on this one again

Easy to get off track but solid hike overall. Get two waterfalls, first one is better but both are solid.

This hike is some bs lmao. We scaled the side of a mud moutain. All the trails were overgrown. We lost the path multiple times and ended up at a sad, small waterfall. We were beginners and part of this trail was insane! No other people were spotted throughtout this hike. If you cannot use a rope to propel down the side of the mountain, I do not recommend.
