Round trip 0.8km, elevation 87m. It takes 30minutes to go up for Beginner lady. Super steep, rocky hike. The Legend of Wai‘anae’s Haunted Mākua Cave According to the Hawaiian legend, Kaneana Cave is home to the underground shark God Nanaue, the son of Kamohoali‘i or King of Sharks, the most sacred brother of the fire goddess Pele. Nanaue had an appetite for human flesh and disguised himself as a man to trick humans. It’s said that weary travelers visiting Mākua Cave at night are sometimes invited to join an old, wrinkled Hawaiian man tending to meat sizzling over a fire. As soon as the tired traveler becomes lethargic from eating the meat, the old man transforms into a shark. Nanaue kills the traveler and leaves the body to rot for three weeks, before consuming the meat. Mākua Cave is supposedly an active hotspot for the spirits of those who died there. This haunted Wai‘anae site has become a repository for psychic energy, says storyteller Lopaka Kapanui. You must respect Hawaii’s God. My local friends said do not go after sunset. Bad things will happen to you. Believe or not, if you have bad spirit or bad Karma, you may not reach at the cave. Choose who you go with. My Instagram is miomanitamio

Stay on trail. You’ll see a mud path with a slight incline to your right. Follow it around to the cave. Hot! Loose rocks. Beautiful view. “Instagrammable” photo.

Super easy hike. Did it at night after a 4 hour dive Sesh and about 6 Coronas.

You need to walk by the highway to get to the start of the trail. Follow narrow path and at second division make a right. Seems like there are many different paths just make sure to merge right and upwards. If you find yourself scrambling then you passed the turn.. you should always be able to walk without need for climbing. I recorded path from cave to the parking lot.

You know when you read the reviews and you’re like oh yeah, that doesn’t sound to bad and kinda take the reviews for granted? Then you start doing the hike and all those reviews become super true and you’re like yeah I shoulda listened? Well. WEAR GOOD FOOT WEAR THAT CAN TRAVERSE VERY LOOSE ROCK. I wore my regular work out tennies and I’ve never been more slow and affected. Also, the trail does start at the 25mph sign. Go straight from the sign. If you find yourself close to the rock face you’re going the wrong way. If you’re not following a trail that is almost entirely loose rock you’re going the wrong way. Bring lots of water cause the west side is the hot side. Beautiful though and definitely worth it. Took our doggo, he loved it but without his own water bottle heat exhaustion could get very real.

This was a good hike, great views, not easy but worth the trip. No trail markings and had to guess which way to go at one point ( we chose right, we were correct). Getting down was tough for someone with a bad knee but was doable. Great out of the way trip without loads of other hikers.

I'd like to begin by saying this trail is closed for a reason, and I do NOT recommend hiking this trail without extensive hiking experience, or some rock climbing experience. The trail, even if you don't take a wrong turn, goes from overgrown foliage, to a steep, rocky, slippery gravel climb. The rocks are VERY loose, and falling is highly possible. Even with my best hiking boots, there was just no traction on some parts of the trail, and falling would have definitely resulted in injury. THAT BEING SAID- The caves are spectacular, and once you are there you feel safe and have amazing views of the coastline and mountains. But again, if you are not highly experienced, this is not the trail for you. I saw many folks turning around and scooting back down on their butts before making it to the caves. (caves are not at the top of the mountain. Take a right whenever possible!)

This hike is illegal and on federal property where live ammunition is found to this day as it is adjacent to an army live fire range. Hike at your own risk ans know your car may get broken into and you could be fined for trespassing on federal property. As for the hike, going up isn’t bad aside from it being basically a vertical rock climb, not really a “hike”. I’d suggest pants and gloves and grippy shoes. The cave is being inundated by disrespectful morons who are littering and peeing and doing grafitti in it, so please do your part to keep it clean as it is sacred to the local culture. Going down is dangerous as the rocks are loose and will fall on anyone below you as you are forced to slide down on your butt. Go down one at a time or risk concussions. This is not a joke - the loose rocks could cause severe head trauma or other injury.

This is a quick hike with great views and photo op spots of the west side. The beginning trail is overgrown, but once you hit the rocky part the trail clears open. Halfway up, the trail gets steep and rocky but then flattens out. There are two caves. The second one is the most popular for pictures. It takes about a total of 30 minutes trip if you’re fit.
