Alltrails - can you make it so scenic drives do not count towards your hiking miles and elevation gain? Some very pretty sections of road on this drive. Highlights would be the eastern edge of the island as you pass Hanauma Bay, round the Makapu Lighthouse and towards Waimanalo. H-3 highway as you approach the Koolaus on the WIndward side is also amazing. H-1 past the airport? not so much.
This is not a hike, this is one of the main roads in Hawaii. We don’t have sidewalks along this road so definitely do not think that you should walk around this like a trail. It is one of the most gorgeous roads you can ever drive on in your life, but that’s all you’ll be able to do on it is drive. Enjoy the view and go slow there’s lots of twists and turns, but I guarantee you you won’t work up a sweat!
We hit this part of our loop trip from Honolulu after sunset. Surprisingly, the island and this road (Rte 83 and Rte 72) are notably enjoyable by moonlight. We returned to visit Hanauma Bay, so we got to see the road from there to Honolulu three times. It was nice in the daylight, but the first view under moonlight was the best. I really enjoyed Hanauma, despite a bad sunburn. It is very crowded, but i can'r resist an opportunity to play with animals - including fish who love handouts (Bring a loaf of bread).
