Getting There

Series of horse, biking and hiking trails in the Pukukea-Paumalu Forest Reserve located in the northernmost district of Oahu. The Pupukea-Paumalu area is rural, largely undeveloped, with rolling terrain and a 300-foot tall bluff approximately 1,200 feet inland from Kamehameha Highway. Three gulches run from mauka to makai, created by three intermittent streams: Paumal, Pklena, and Klunawaikaala. Vegetative communities consist mostly of introduced species, although there are several native plant species still found on-site. Consisting of 1,144-acre City- and State-owned property, the area is being developed and maintained as a shared community resource. There are more than 15 miles of single track and jeep roads linking up from behind the Ehukai Elementary School all the way to Pupukea. No motorized vehicles allowed. There are many linking trails and a unique multi-junction area in the middle called Lilikoi Junction. There are many jumps and ramps to suit riders of all levels. Hikers can enjoy the forest walk or look forward to the cliff views overlooking Sharks Cove and the Three Tables. There are also many interesting bunkers and strange objects to explore.

Park on the left hand side of the road just before the entrance.

The North Shore Community Land Trust Board

Take Kamehameha Highway to Pupukea Road. Turn left at Wilinau Road going all the way to the end of the road. Look for the Pupukea-Paumalu signs on the left. Alternatively, drive to the end of Pupukea Road and stop at the Boy Scout Camp. Access can also be gained through the camp or by getting to Kaunala Trail.

Great trail but it is more like 10.5 miles to complete the perimeter. Many new trails have been cut since this was created, so it is very easy to get lost. Beautifully shaded and non-technical. Elevation was measured at only 1,300 feet, so a very easy hike.

Nice and relaxing trail but not much to see. Lots of pine. Not well marked so we aimlessly wandered trying to find something. Would be cool for mountain biking or horseback riding. But a pretty boring walk.

Nice and shaded and cool. Not marked at all. Downloaded AllTrails for this hike and there were areas that said were a trail but there was no visible trail. Beautiful though!

This trail is totally flat and there are ZERO trail markers. I passed one lookout point, but otherwise the trail is all enclosed. Don't get me wrong - it's a beautiful walk. But it's definitely not a hike. And the parking is sketchy cause it's in a nice neighborhood with "no parking" signs everywhere. If you decide to go on this jaunt, just know that it's good steady state cardio and that's about it.

Great hike but not well signed. There are a lot of side trails so you may end up doing a much longer distance - totally worth it. We spent 2 1/2 hours on the trails.

Cool spot for an easy hike. No coastal views but there are numerous single track trails to explore and the surroundings are gorgeous!

I only wish it had more signs. I had a hard time finding my way back to the road after I was done.

Quite a forest trail, do some research prior to taking it on as there are multiple, multiple paths to take throughout the Pupukea Forest. A Mountain cyclists dream come true, as most of the trails are geared for bikes.

The hiking trail wasn’t clearly marked and I don’t feel like I got in the full 9+ miles, but still a great area to trek around. The whole area is a network of walking/biking/atv trails. It’s mostly woods and bike trails, so unfortunately no epic views, but I think it’d make for a great nature walk/zen session. The only steep/difficult areas (for hiking) are the entrance/exit and the specifically biking areas, so strongly recommend for those who are looking to get into/new to hiking. Seems like a great place to take the dogs.

The trail was really good enjoyed hiking it a lot with some friends. Our first time to hike the trail and had a good time choosing from choosing many directions to hike from. Hike offers well kept trails and offers a great destination for mountain bikers which we ran to multiple times with many down hill mounds and fun little drops. Enjoyed the fact you can continue on to Ehukai Pillbox as well. Good trail!

Jan 2017. Loved this trail! Tons of trails in different directions, GPS with this app was helpful for staying oriented. Lots of flat easy hiking. Also parts of the trail (Party Line trail) that seemed designed for mountain biking, with lots of ups and downs and banked curves, which I decided to skip. But it was easy just to go a different way. Only encountered one person on a mountain bike over a couple hours of hiking. Mostly shaded with a nice breeze off the ocean. No views of the ocean on the part I hiked. Would definitely do this one again, and explore more of the different trails.

Great for a dog, just watch out for mountain bikes. Tons of trails going in every direction. Getting lost uncovered tons of hidden gems, just make sure to carry plenty of water for you and the puppy if you plan on getting lost like I did.

Fabulous forest walk, nice and cool even in the summer. Lots of tracks, would have been completely lost without the track, so thanks for putting this together. Got some good geocaching as well!

We accidentally stumbled onto this trail from the ehukai trail. Had a beautiful bunker though we didn't do the whole thing it was still beautiful. Lots of side trails.
