Getting There

This trail begins in a residential area. Please be mindful of residents, be quiet, and park legally. There are no bathrooms or other facilities at the trailhead. Please use the restroom before you come and pack out all trash. The rainforest in this area sees a lot of visitors, so it is important to minimize your impact in every way you can. A nice hike through the jungle to great view of Kailua, Maunawilli Falls, and a swimming hole. Maunawili Trail contours the base of the Koolau Mountain Range on the windward side. It begins off the Pali Highway and ends in Waimanalo. It offers spectacular views of the windward side of Oahu, Olomana, and the Koolaupoko watershed. Vegetation along the trail includes mountain apple, rose apple, ti, naupaka, mamake, lobelia, koa and ohia. Maunawili Trail is a good family trail. There are three access points for this trail. The Maunawilli Falls Trail is a great hike in Kailua along the river that eventually stops at a beautiful waterfall with a great swimming hole below. Many people like to jump from the waterfall into the pool below, and some with a bit more courage even climb higher to the side of the waterfall to jump further (try at your own risk). The trail is often muddy, especially after rains, and you will cross the river several times along the trail. About half way through the hike you will break out of the trees for some nice views of the surrounding mountains and views towards Kailua in the distance.

You must park on the street. There are no facilities.

Park far from the trailhead--there are strict parking regulations and you don't want a ticket. This trail follows creek and is usually very wet and muddy. Wear appropriate shoes (sandals are very hard to walk in once they get muddy). Almost all of this hike is covered, but mosquitos and other bugs can be a pain. Wear bug spray or keep a good friend close behind you to swat away the pests or you will end up with quarter-size bite marks.

Great trail. One of the most physical ones that we’ve done here in this island so far. Very very muddy so wear god shoes. If you’re not a people person, go during the week or earlier in the day to miss the crowd. Awesome looking water hole but we didn’t get to enjoy it because there were so many people there. Great workout.

Exceptionally muddy after recent rainfall. Lots of shoes/soles left on the trail from suction cup level mud. Good views. Extremely busy on Sunday morning/afternoon.

A great, adventurous hike that is very cool, but with some major inconveniences if you are unprepared. VERY muddy and LOTS of mosquitoes—if you’re not prepared to clean your clothes, shoes or stuff afterwards I do not recommend. I also got about 20 bites (no joke) on my legs and arms, so bring bug repellent. Also beware of douchey party people who bring speakers and crowd the pool area at the end of the hike.

Nice views and great swimming pool at the waterfall. Over the past few years, this trail has become extremely busy. Expect a large group of young kids jumping into the pool below the waterfall and loud military guys if you come. Go early or late afternoon to avoid crowds and have a moment to yourself at the waterfall. Expect mud, stream crossings, and mosquitos.

The view is nice but the waterfall and swimming pool are awesome. This hike is very muddy. Only the first 100 yards is paved. You walk over branches and rocks most of the time. Wear good shoes for the hike and then bring flip-flops or water shoes to cross streams and/or while swimming. The trail is shaded. I recommend bug spray. I only got bit 3 times so it isn’t super buggy.

This hike is beautiful and has some hidden gems. This hike is almost ALWAYS muddy, so be prepared to get dirty and slip. The waterfall is beautiful at the end. If you have any questions, my instagram is @wollyhoodshoots

Such a great hike and amazing swimming hole at the end. When you get to the waterfall and swimming hole, if you climb up the side of the waterfall there is another smaller waterfall just a few steps beyond, with less people.

10.10.2020. Hiked this morning along with 2 kids of our hiking buddy. Fairly easy, mostly shaded, just follow the ribbons when you hit 2 branching trails, and stay close by the stream to your right or left depending on when you cross it :) Nice vegetation, I so love the variety of trees and plants. Be extra careful while walking/crossing the stream, rocks are slippery, the right pair of shoes helps. It hasn’t rained for awhile so not muddy. Spent sometime by the falls as the kids swam. Heavily trafficked by mid morning. Good cardio workout in the open air.

Beautiful waterfall with a nice trail leading to it. You won’t be disappointed when you’re jumping into the water. This was my first hike in Oahu, and I absolutely loved it! Highly recommend to anyone that is looking for a fun first hike on the Island!
