Maunawili Falls via Pali Highway is a 6.3 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
It's long and a little muddy but good. No one on the trail until 300 yards away from the falls. too many people at the falls, bunch of low class people diving there even if forbidden. I would consider this easy more than moderate but it's a good work out. be prepared to put your feet in the water shoes or not before the falls.
It has been very rainy this week, so the trail is pretty muddy. One of the falls is tricky getting around, but we were able to navigate around it. I’m guessing when there isn’t as much rain, the water isn’t as high. We will definitely do this hike again when we come back next time.
Such a beautiful hike! Definitely more on the easy side. There were a lot of people at the falls, so I didn’t spend time there, but the views were worth doing it.
Crowded at falls. Back trail Pali highway route definitely preferable to main route - beautiful views and hardly anyone on trail
If you park at the parking area, don’t go down into the gulch immediately- follow along the inside of the guardrail until you see an official trailhead.
I really like this way to the falls. Less muddy and less crowded. Today anyway.
This is a magnificent trail. The beginning of this trail looks like it has been landscaped to be the ideal forest walk. Go further and it’s just more natural beauty. And the falls at the end are “ice”-ing on the cake - the main word being “ice” as the water is freezing (but still good fun!)
Nice hike! More dry than I expected so I cut short of the falls and even took a wrong turn.
This is the longer, dryer way to Maunawili Falls. Emphasis on longer. Just over 6 miles in length. I would budget 2-4 hours for this. Parking lot at the trail head just off Pali Highway. Buggy in there.
Biked in the access road, and hiked the trail. I’m an average guy, not in the best shape but not the worst.. took me about 2-1/2 hours up the road to the trail head, and about 2 hours from there up to the summit. On the way back down trail took about 1-1/2 to get back to my bike. The bike ride down was epic and downhill the entire way so I did it in about 30-40 mins. Trail was slopping through mud pits the entire way but definitely rewarded you with some of the most awe inspiring views on the entire island. Would do it again.
The mileage is off and we recorded 6.2 miles. This trail is really kept up with and had lots of great views along the way. If you’re not the best hiker and you’re looking to challenge yourself this is the trail for it. We took my dog and she did fine as well. We didn’t get to go to the falls due to the crowds of people partying at it but it still was a nice trail.
The falls are awesome, definitely bring your bathing suit. Breathtaking views along the way. We started the hike from the Ko’olau Golf Course parking lot and took the Old Pali Highway. The Maunawili Trail portion was on the moderate side of easy. Some parts are narrow and overgrown, so I’d highly recommend long pants to save your legs from getting cut up. It’s been a few days since the last rain, so the trail was fairly dry. I could see if it had rained more recently the trail would be fairly muddy with a few stream crossings. This part was well shaded. The trail down to the Falls was a bit more intense, fairly steep. That part earns the difficult rating for sure. The way back felt much harder, a lot of uphill. This part doesn’t have much shade, but it’s less than a mile each way.
This trail starts with the gate at the back of the cul-de-sac and continues up the access road to Maunawili Ridge trail, ultimately intersecting with the Maunawili Trail junction. Take a side trail to Maunawili Falls to cool off on your way back down the ridge.
