NOTE: This trail is on Private Property and is closed to the public. Violators/trespassers are subject to citations. Trail is kind of hard to find, but just head up and you'll find it at the top of the first ridge. It can be difficult coming down in the dark, so watch your time. One technical item to note: when you reach the private property/utility building, the trail follows the southern edge of the fence and is very over grown. Be careful of rusted fences! You can do this as a one way, but will need two cars for this hike. Prior to beginning this hike it's ideal to park a car in Waimanalo. Use the other car to drive to the trailhead near the Makapuu Lookout. One of the best hikes on the island of Oahu as far as scenery is concerned. The hike is long, dry and hilly.

Park at the Makapuu Lookout. Restrooms are nearby at the Makapuu Bay Park across from the Sea Life Park.

Great!

One of my favorite hikes in the entire world! It’s a must-do every time I come home.

it's 3 mi from the lookout to the puka... but it is a painfully SLOW 3 miles. leggings are a must. really thorny. A lot of rock climbing and scampering so your pace is really slow. I averaged about 50 minutes per mile and I can run a 7-minute mile lol.

Parked at the lookout, climbed up along the fence. Forgot to log the way up but we stayed along the right side of the fence and hiked along the cliff side. Best view and breeze. Hiked up to the puka and Back. Really nice hike with lots of paths. Great views and payout

Amazing trail, but very clearly illegal. We started from the Waimanolo side because there was HPD waiting by the lighthouse. Hate to find the trail start as it’s unmarked in this side. After wandering in the woods for a bit we found it by using the All Trails map. Crazy climb up this side and over multiple ridges. We went out to the Puka. Insane views!!! Easily some of the best I’ve ever seen on island. Would recommend if you’re careful, respectful, and don’t start on the side where you’re likely to get a citation.

I did this hike a couple years ago and I didn’t know it was closed then just followed my friends \(^~^)/ hands down the best view I’ve ever seen it’s extremely sketchy! My brooks were TORN apart coming down because of the rocks it’s 7 miles in but we only completed 4/5 after passing the puka it’s nothing but walking on the edge one wrong step and it’s death ...second time I tried to go I noticed all the signs and HPD was there... wish this wasn’t private property /:

HPD is heavily watching and ready to stop anyone from hitting this trail. Would just recommend to find another spot to hike

HPD was there this morning, and told us that this is now all privately owned land by the state. The HPD guy was nice about it, but told us it is strictly prohibited now. They stay there and actively cite trespassers. DO NOT do this trail.

Forgot to record the first part from Makapu’u lookout. Love this hike though. Today was my first time going all the way through to Waimanalo. Very exhausting.

It is pretty obvious that this is not a place that you were supposed to hike! Signs are posted that make it clear and there’s no real entryway.
