NOTE: This trail is located on private government property owned by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and considered trespassing if you do not have a permit. It is not maintained and there are no signs telling visitors where to go. Please be respectful of the trail and pick up all trash. Do not attempt this hike if it is raining as the stream can be very dangerous after and during heavy rainfall. One of Oahu's most popular unsanctioned hiking trails, Lulumahu Falls Trail traverses into a dense bamboo forest, along the Nu'uanu Reservoir and up to Lulumahu Falls, a 50 foot plus waterfall. This short hike includes beautiful views of Hawaii, stream crossings and muddy rock paths. Although a short drive from Honolulu's Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head this trail is off the beaten path and can be tricky to find. The trailhead can be accessed from the Pali Highway via Old Paki Road before the Pali Lookout. Nearby Oahu hikes include Manoa Falls, a 150 foot waterfall accessible via a maintained trail with restrooms, the famous Pali Lookout, the Kaniakapupu Ruins (summer palace of King Kamehameha III and Queen Kalama) and the Windward Coast featuring two of the most beautiful beaches on the Island of Oahu - Lanikai and Kailua Beaches. Visit the Hawaiian Islands Alltrails page for more waterfall hikes.

This was a fun trail, but did involve crossing the water multiple times by climbing across boulders. It had not rained recently, but I can see how it would be difficult to get there if it was raining or recently rained. There is a pool at the bottom of the waterfall that people swim in. The entrance is to the left of the chain link gate (it has been cut open). Continue down the path and at the Y, continue straight/ take the path on the right. There are colored ribbons, blue and red throughout the trail to lead you down the right path.

This is one of our favorite hikes and we make sure to go every time we visit Oahu. The last two times we visited there was a parking lot at the beginning of the trail. Looks like they are doing construction there this year and that entire part of the trail that goes up the grass hill next to the water reservoir is closed now. The Pali highway is blocked off so you have to park on Nuuanu Pali dr. There was a cop chillin in his car there but he didn’t bother any of the hikers going onto the trail. Once you park, there is a metal gate that is cut open on the left where you can start the trail. After the bamboo forest the trail does become kind of confusing but just be sure to follow the pink and blue ribbons. If you see them you’re going the right way. Once you reach the creek, the trail continues on both sides of the water almost the entire way. We usually end up crossing the water several times on our way to the waterfall but it is always possible to do while keeping your feet dry by climbing on rocks so water shoes aren’t absolutely necessary for this hike. The waterfall at the end is amazing and the pool is fun to lay in after the hike.

Super tricky to continue on the correct path but kind hikers left pink and other color markers to help guide you. Take it easy going up to make sure you’re not going the wrong way. Generally if you follow the stream you’ll get there but like I said - tricky! To get towards the trail take the left into the bamboo forest right after hole in gate. Continue through this up the hill and right down the gravelish road. Then to the left of the graffiti wall, walk through the fence ending and up. Amazing hike! Super fun. Waterfall is flowing beautifully right now! Oh!!! BUG SPRAY IS A MUST!

Great hike and finishes with a gorgeous waterfall at the end where you can have a refreshing swim (for those game enough to jump in!) The hike is relatively easy but you still need good footwear and be prepared for a little mud

Awesome 1/2 day excursion. Great hike, easy, leading to a beautiful waterfall and shallow pool to swim in. This one is best a day or so after it rains so the waterfalls are full. Totally illegal; be ready to sneak through multiple fences and possibly ticketed if you don’t have a permit.

We decided to hike this trail today and loved the scenery! First, please note the entrance is NOT at the water board building; it’s actually past the water board on the right side of the road just before the intersection at Pali Highway. Many people park along the side of the road, and the hole in the fence is visible once you walk up to the fence (it will be on the left). The bamboo forest is beautiful! Watch for the pink markers tied to the trees, and when in doubt, follow the creek. The hike was muddy in areas, but manageable and a lot of fun! We will definitely return and will add this hike to the places we take our friends and family that come to visit us.

Good and easy trail! There’s a nice waterfall at the end that’s worth the walk. A lot of people though, you don’t get much quiet. Definitely go and get wet under the falls!

Trial is slightly marked with ribbons so it can be a little difficult to find your way. Be prepared to get wet. Fun hike!

We just completed this hike and loved it. Once you park by the entrance (that goes through the fence), follow the main path down without turning off for as long as you can. We turned too early and wandered through the bamboo forest for a while before ending up right back where we had started. If you follow the right path, you should come to a kind of cement barrier with a stream running through it. Once you cross over that stream, there aren’t any other turn offs to decide between. Many others said this trail was poorly marked, but we found it very easy to follow. It is a well traveled path and it’s quite clear where the foot traffic has been. Some stream crossing is necessary, but is easily done without getting wet. There are even flag tape markers to help see where you should cross to. Waterfall was stunning! It was so lovely to sit at the falls and enjoy the scenery at the top of the hike. Easy trek back out that felt like it took half the time as it did on the way in. We detoured and checked out the nearby ruins as well, which are well worth the detour.

very hard to find the (right) trail. we got lost on the way back and wandered through the forest for an hour in the dark. now that we know how to get there, we will definitely go again! it sucked that it crossed back and forth over the same stream 5 or 6 times. my Chihuahua doesn't like water and i prefer dry feet. GORGEOUS WATERFALL.

Really hard trail to follow. Got lost a few times and ended up just following the stream up. Super muddy route but gorgeous falls to reward us at the end. Wore my 2 year old while hiking with my 4 year old.

Tried multiple diff paths to get to trail, Each time ending up by a government fence. Followed the pink markers in the bamboo forest. Still couldn’t make our way through. Very muddy. Disappointing couldn’t find our way through! Not well marked.

Awesome waterfall hike. We went while it was raining - must be very careful at stream crossings. You can purchase a permit online to do this hike legally. Permits are issued for free in person.

Went on it a year ago and want to go back. Lots of water areas. The waterfall itself at the end is magic. It’s a really good moderate hike as you have to climb on rocks and trees a bit, get wet and dirty :)
