Lualualei Lookout [CLOSED] is a 4.2 mile out and back trail located near Waianae, Oahu, Hawaii that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching.

Not as muddy as a lot of the other hikes on the island, but pretty slippery at the top. There’s some erosion at the top so you have to watch your step.
Nice somewhat easy hike with moderate inclines. Would like to know if there’s a backstory to this location. Saw some rock walls and formations that could have been structures at some point in time. Mostly shaded with great views once you make it to the top.
Very nice, easy hike.. Slippery when rainy, but manageable. Awesome sick views!! Breathtaking!
Very enjoyable as always, but very wet. The grass on the first half was pretty overgrown.
Once you get passed the cave it is so amazing. I feel like I overcame the long hike. Granted I am used to flat land.
This is a beautiful hike. Practically shaded all the way through minus some spots on the jeep trail. The jeep trail portion is the only gripe I have since it has 1 to 2 inch loose gravel. Can lead to ankle rolls if not careful. The payoff at the end is worth the effort. Just make sure to head down the trail past the trees towards the water when instructed or you could end up an hour or so off route.
The hike was awesome! But the insanely sketchy people, activities, and car carcasses littering the single lane road getting to the trail head was more than a little unnerving.
Very nice trail. Trail is pretty the whole way through the forest and the top has a great view. Definitely follow the map on AllTrails. It’s hard to follow in the beginning
My watch said an increase of 1300 feet and it didn’t even seem like that much. There are spots of decent incline, but mostly a walk on a jeep trail and through the woods. Someone has put PINK ribbons along this trail all the way to the top at points that could be confusing. Following these ribbons will get you to the top with little to no trouble, but the app is a good backup. The views are worth it to do this trail.
The directions provided in the details on the trail are spot on, except the trailhead is more than a few paces from the gate. However, it is easy to find. Once you get to the lookout area, head right to get the best views. Trails was fairly easy, with generally mild incline the whole way, but it gets a little more steep towards the end. View was definitely worth the hike!!
This trail is really beautiful at the end, but just wanted to come on here to let people know that there is a very high chance your car will be broken into or itll at least be attempted. Ive got scratches all over my door from some asshole trying to wedge something in there. Doesn't matter if youre a tourist or local. If youve got a beat up car, take that one
It’s a really great trail, not as hard to follow as some of the reviews said, it’s got a nice waterfall and river crossing, so many changes in scenery. It’s a beautiful hike and beautiful views!
great trail for moderate/beginners. i wouldn't take any children under 8-9. Use the app. i came off the trail 2-3 times.
The trail was okay. Definitely a workout. It’s a steady incline the entire way. You’re on a gravel road at first, then in tall grass which then leads to the woods. I stopped after 2 mile point, where the ridge almost begins (because I had littles with me). Getting there was pretty simple. The road leading to the parking lot is pretty sketchy. You take a narrow road (looks like you leading to nowhere...abandon cars, trash, debris on the sides of the road) to a parking lot. It’s the parking lot for the Waianae hunting range area. The trail begins past the closed gates on the right,(maybe 30 paces or so) the red all trails line will get you there.
Didn’t end up on the trail. The road up isn’t pretty - burned and abandoned cars, some homeless folks hanging out along the way. We turned back after not finding parking and someone lit a fire in the brush along the access road. If you’re a tourist in an obvious looking rental car (e.g., mustang, jeep, new car), I’d avoid or at lest be extremely careful. Coming from San Francisco, even we were surprised at the state of affairs along the way... Kinda sad about it because the photos looked beautiful and we could tell that the hike would’ve offered great views of the rock formations and valley.
Great trail! Beautiful rock formations about 3/4 up. Bring bug spray and sunscreen! The tree with the blue marker and rock is farther up the road than originally anticipated. It’s very noticeable. Also, the top of the trail can be confusing. Just follow the ridge west once you arrive at the top of the ridge.
