This trail that rises almost 1800 feet before peaking on the spine of the Ko`olau Ridge. It's a great hike and a tough run, for it is steep, but it is very run-able and offers a great reward in the form of spectacular views. The locals say that you're suppose to run to the top, come back down to the picnic table, and then run back to the top again.

Absolutely loved this hike! Got a little bit from all the best trails: some pine forest miles, some jungle, some mud, some stairs, a nice ridge and a beautiful view! We started around 8:30am and it took us about 5 hours including the walk from and to the bus (30 min. each way) and a couple of breaks during the hike. We went after weeks with lots of rain but only the stairs-part was a bit muddy but nothing too bad. You start by zig-zagging up on the side of the mountain - a pretty descent walk. Then you get to a picnic table and from there it begins to get a little steeper. Though roots help you a lot of the way and once you start to get a view, you’ll find the stairs that will lead you to the top. It does have shade along the trail, but bring sunscreen and definitely water and mosquito deterrent. Photos on: @maleneroennest Instagram

Make sure you always have a plan and you come prepared. As we reached the trailhead we were greeted by fire department personnel and rescue/search helicopters flying overhead. A hiker has been missing since last night. I mentioned to the fire department folks that I had a tourniquet and a knife in my camelbak and that I’d keep a lookout. Apparently she only had a bottle of water and no phone, and her group somehow got separated from her and LEFT her. I’m sure more details will come out, but bottom line, be responsible and be prepared.

Fairly easy trail, done with both my kids (5/6yo)...lots of mosquitos! Bring lots of water, few snacks for the top, and lather up the big spray. Stairs could get super slippery after a rain.

It’s over 5 miles according to my Apple Watch...terrains goes from typical forrest to pine forest to another type of pine forest to slippery above ground roots and finally opens up to many series of stairs with open mountain and city views all the way to the top. An absolutely gorgeous view at the top! Well worth it.

Clocking in at over 5 miles on my Garmin GPS watch, this trail was a bit longer and tougher than we thought heading out. It begins with several rocky switchbacks that made me glad to have my hiking boots on, through some beautiful scenery. You get a great switch between tropical and pine as you ascend the trails. After hitting the picnic area about 2 miles in the trail turns steep to get to the summit, with many roots and eventual stairs to the top, some areas still muddy and slippery, that proved quite tiring and puts this towards the harder end of moderate for us. The views at the summit are definitely amazing for the east side of the island and the hike was worth it. Bring plenty of water as there's no shade once you hit the ridge portion of the trail and hiking boots definitely recommended.

10/6/2019-Started around 0730 and crossed paths with 76 people (most of them were on their way in while we were leaving). Trail was mainly dry with some muddy sections on the stairs going up to the top. There were also 2-3 sections with some fruit flies because of rotting fruit but these were easy to navigate. Overall weather was sunny with no cloud cover so the ridge portion was warm as expected. Also saw a rescue helicopter flying over the valley and then saw the parked fire truck at the cul-de-sac. Otherwise another awesome view of the Windward side from the top and recommend 1L of water and sunscreen.

Nice trail. A little muddy, but made sure to hike not after a rainstorm and it wasn't that bad. Very steep near the top, but plenty of wood plank steps to get you up. The east of the island didn't seem to be as overcast as the rest of the island, but still be sure that it's a semi-clear day on the east side, so you can actually see the valleys below.

Great trail! Muddy at first, then about halfway in, and the steps going up at the end. Mostly shaded, until the last half mile or so. Parking is just street parking in the neighborhood. I took the bus and got off at Kalanianaole Hwy & Paeoki Pl, and walked 1.4 miles to the trailhead. I came on a day where it was supposed to be raining. It was pouring when I arrived at the bus stop, but went away, and only sprinkled like 3 times the rest of the time I was out. Once you get past the picnic tables, you’ll start using roots as stairs. The stairs can be a little sketchy at times, if you’re just wearing tennis shoes like I was. Just be careful and don’t be afraid to get a little muddy. Beautiful views at the top!!!

The view is quite rewarding. You can see from Kailua all the way to Kuliouou. Wish I had better shoes though. Trail was rocky at times and had large roots to walk on most of the time. Bring extra water.

In my opinion the scenery is pretty unique. The fact that you go from tropical to woods back to tropical is pretty cool. Just be careful for the roots that you have to walk on through the woods. There's plenty of shade that's for sure. Also there's a wonderful picnic area once you hit the wooded area. When you get to the top the view is fantastic. It's also got a very nice breeze the higher up you get.

Great hike. Some areas can be muddy and quite slippery. Bug spray recommended. Views at the top are awesome and the tail from start to finish is quite pretty. Some of the trail is a good little workout, especially a series of tall/steep stairs installed at the top.

Spectacular views and especially when you get to the top ! The ground is uneven in areas and has many steps . I saw several people using walking sticks to help them with the uneven terrain . This hike so so worth it , I would do the hike again.

Awesome trail! Well maintained. About 2/3 of the trail is shaded, with the final third of the top out in the open with beauitful views. It took us about 2 hours to the top with several stops along the way for pictures, half the time coming down. The last stretch of the hike at the top is the most challenging simply because its climbing a bunch of steep stairs. Would definitely recommend doing this hike on a sunnier day with low chance of rain - the stairs at the top become super slippery, muddy and dangerous when wet. The view at the top is incredible!

Great hike! Your walk through every type of tree on the island- there is a pine forest. Very beautiful and different than any hike I have been on. Great scenery that changed. About half a mile to the top is all stairs- def got a quad and booty work out. Worth the views! Bring water since it's a out a 5 mile hike and good shoes, you are walking over a lot of roots and different terrain.

alternative trail to the right going down the ridge towards route 72

amazing views at the top. beautiful pine tree areas with soft ground. bring plenty of water.

Way better than I was expecting! highly recommend! only about 1 hr, 15 min to top with lots of shade for 2/3 of it. last third up has stairs so you're not slipping up the ridge, which is nice. the view at the top is awesome! you can see all the way from kailua around the southeast too of Oahu to (I think) Diamond Head. really not muddy at all.
