This is a challenging hike that requires rock scrambling and getting dirty! Start out from the Kolekole Trail and then up to the Pu'u Hapapa Summit. Loads of fun but this isn't for kids. This route is definitely for the more adventurous and those who aren't bothered by heights or sheer drop offs. Some rock scaling is involved as well.

The trail past the initial Lookout is accessed through the tall weeds to the left portion of the trail once you approach the bench. From the initial access after the family-friendly trail, you will elevate over loose dirt until reaching a nice outcropping where, I assume, most turn around. Z If you plan on attempting a Pu'u Hapapa bid, contour around the cliff face you see until you reach the ridge. Eventually you will meet a convergence with the other half of the loop. Keep going until you meet a tent and eventually, a helicopter landing area. Overall, the route was very graded, it wasn't difficult, there were only a few technical sections, and the views were fantastic.

AMAZING views at the end. About half way, there’s a part that’s straight up rock climbing that was a bit sketch. But it’s a short hike with huge pay off at the end.

Good, went up further the bench. If you go further the bench it’s not for kids

Completed this hike in 2013. This is one of the best hikes on the island; highly recommended.

It is a great hike, an adventure! Beautiful, fun, challenging. However if you decide to do the loop check All trails and some reviews. Go with someone who knows the trail: Puu Hapapa Alternate Trail to lock the loop isnt for everyone. Some serious drop offs. I mean you are climbing a wall. I went that way down, big mistake. Holly climb it was. Be very careful, and dont go alone. However the other ridge even though challenging at places but is doable and breathtakingly beautiful.

Little difficult to find, quite buggy, but great views. Even just the views form the paced going up was lovey. There should probably be more legitimate trail markers, but there was some clothes that others used and that helped.

Great trail! The kolekole was muddy and slippery but was fine if you have decent set of trail shoes. The Kolekole section is fine for familys, but once you pass the overlook with the bench and get on the Pu'u Hapapa loop, it starts the steep and exposed ridges. I recommend going counter clockwise in order to climb up the steeper ridge, and down the easier one. The western ridge (steeper) has 3 short, but steep, exposed saddles that will require some rock climbing.

Quite a rough trail in many parts, once arriving to the shear cliff wall past the gun turret, decided to turn back as the path was too sketchy. Not for the inexperienced.

Spectacular views and fun challenges along the way. If you know someone with base access, I highly recommend!
