Kolekole and Pu'u Hapapa Trail Loop is a 2.9 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round.
This is a steep hike with amazing views. The path is overgrown and can be loose and steep in places. There are some steep cliff sections.
My favorite hike on the island. But it is difficult. You are basically walking on the edge of the mountains the entire time and it gets very windy. Dont bring dogs or small children if they are afraid of heights or cant minorly scale a rockside. Because thats what you'll be doing in a loop!
Didn’t do it all because of kiddos and being muddy. We will be finishing it soon!
beautiful breathtaking views of Waianae side. Very steep uphill tricky on the descend since there are no ropes going down. Winds at times are blowing pretty hard so you need to sit down and wait for the strong winds to pass. Wear leggings , hat and sunscreen. It’s really hot and toasty up there.
Down and back. Loop was a bit too intimidating with two small children
Okay so a few things. This trail has beautiful views, but it can be very precarious in some places. Any misstep could result in a broken ankle, or worse, a tumble down a cactus strewn cliff (ow). We went up at the first right and took the alternate route down. The way up required some rock climbing, and came very close to the edge. The way that we went down, the part of the map that looks like an M, was extremely loose. Mostly loose gravel and rock, very slippery. When we do this one again we will stick to the first right for the way up and down. The trail was a little overgrown, and I ended up pretty scraped up in my shorts. I recommend long pants for this one, and appropriate shoes!! Overall this was a beautiful and exhilarating hike.
Quite rugged. There are many drop offs, wide panoramic views, and spots impassable without climbing.
Absolutely love this trail to Pu’u Hapapa. We didn’t go back the other half of Kolekole because the rock ledge to get down didn’t seem the safest. But amazing views and barely any foot traffic.
