Koko Crater Tramway to Kokohead Lookout is a 1.8 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.
This is a steep climb to the top of Koko Head Crater with spectacular panoramic views of the east Honolulu shoreline. The 1000 plus step-like walking track consists of abandoned railroad ties that run along the crater's west side to the top of Koko Crater. The military used them previously during World War II as part of an incline tram to transport supplies to a lookout post at the summit. A short drive from Diamond Head and Waikiki, this popular hiking trail can be accessed at Koko Head Park in Hawaii Kai. This is a great workout with a beautiful view at the summit - don't forget to bring water! Visitors might also be interested in the Koko Crater Botanical Garden which can be accessed inside the crater. Visitors can drive around the crater to the opposite side to access the gardens.
Parking is free next to baseball field, crowded on weekends; don't leave valuables in the car. Also near a shooting range. Public restrooms.

-There is a part of the trail where the tracks turn into a bridge with no bottom. I can be a bit scary/dangerous. There is a way around the bridge if you head to the right (shady section). -Watch out for concrete parts of the trail. It gets covered in dirt and becomes more slippery. -The road to the parking lot is usually closed from the Highway and you have to go through residential area (west side) to park. -Go early when the suns not beating down on you. -Take your time. -Bring at least one water bottle. -Wear a hat. -Use sunscreen. -Don't leave any valuables in the car or in plain sight of windows.
Take Hwy 72 to Koko Crater hike turn left on Lunalilo Home Rd, then right on Anapalau St, which ends on Koko Head State Park Rd (this road can be accessed from Hwy 72, but is sometimes closed). Alternate from Waikiki: Take H1 east bound and you will see Koko Crater on the left side. The seaward wall of the crater can be seen from Kalanianale Highway just past Hanauma Bay on the East Coast, approximately 20-minutes from Waikiki. HIKE TO THE TOP: start behind the Hawaii Job Corps Training Center across from Hanauma Bay - follow the road past the rifle range and park at the Training Center. HIKE
Not for anyone with small animals or children. Great view but steep and slightly muddy.
This trail is definitely a great cardio workout!! And so worth it!!! The views are amazing day and night!!!
Best stair-master workout EvEr!! They are replacing the steps. Thank you to the community for the great work
Great workout! Going Early morning before the sun gets strong would be my preference.
Incredible views at the top. So worth it. Had a variety of stairs. Some you have to balance across, some have a huge step. Don’t recommend doing this in the middle of the day when it is hot though, there is no shade on the stairs. Only off to the sides and at the top.
Strenuous uphill hike, but the views are 100% worth it at the top. Be careful going both up and down, and definitely take your time.
