Gary and Anne tackled this in the suggested clockwise direction. Appreciated the shade and the trail conditions. A few knolls along the way for views. Returning via the road not that exciting, but still a nice day out. Off to the beach.

Stretches of the trail portion were very buggy due to the choke cherry trees and dropped rotting fruit. Nice variety. Will probably do again, but on a day that’s not so muggy. Lots of shade!

Fun trail and good for trail running. Watch your footing and specifically watch for roots and slippery rocks in sections where the path gets narrow. There was a crew of 5 ppl doing work with a chainsaw and shears when I was on the trail so it might not be as over grown after today.

I would recommend this trail to anyone who is looking for a moderate trail that is super dog-friendly. I would travel clock-wise. The first half is in the forest, and the second half is along an old abandoned highway. It took us about 2.5 hours. There is plenty of shade, so any time of day should be good, although mid-day hours are always hotter. I always recommend wearing hiking boots on Hawaii hikes, as they are often muddy. I also would recommend pants for this hike, as there are some portions of the trail that are overgrown and there are a lot of grass/branches that brush your lower legs.

Such a great trail. Ran the majority of it with my dog and friend. Challenging uphill portions with beautiful views of the trees and water. Exposed roots and some fallen trees are also something to be cautious of. Will totally do this again!!

This hike took about 2.5 hours to complete at a casual pace. Slick after rain, pay attention to the roots and fallen trees so you don’t slip. A few decent views of the shoreline, but 80% of the time you are in the thick of the jungle or on the road. If you go clock-wise (which I would recommend as someone else in the thread suggested), the second half of the hike will be on a paved / gravel road. There were a few little trails that you’ll find on the hike that lead to some nice views, but watch your footing. Maybe try going during a weekend when there are more people around to avoid a break-in - there was glass on the ground next to a few cars suggesting previous break-ins. (We only noticed that on the way back or else we might have decided to go elsewhere.) In my opinion, the island of Oahu offers much better hikes.

First half of the hike was a nice, navigable trail with great foliage and shade. Second half was on an old, closed-down paved road. A great trail for dogs and families. We didn’t see anyone else on the trail, except the first/last half mile.

2.5 hr hike. Be sure to take the offshoot trails you see from time to time. They lead to nice views of the Canopy. Half of the trail is a dirt road or abandoned paved road. Sections of the paved road have eroded down the mountain so be cautious. Used 500ml water but I would advise bringing a liter.

KILLER TRAIN RUNNING BROS!!! Ah man!!! DEATH TO the designated path! I blasted through on the paved road for about 3 miles past the trail for some incredible scents and descents oh man! Not a soul past the trail, there is so much beauty in solitude and presence. DO IT TEAM!

A good nature hike to explore the island of Hawaii and all of its beautiful nature. A fairly easy hike as half of it in on a paved road. Caution, can get hot in the middle of the day. Very beautiful green trees and shrubs everywhere you look! There is nothing like this

Started around 0800 and encountered 12 people during the whole trek, including 3 mountain bikers and 3 dirt bikers. Parking for this trail is outside of the Camp Pupukea parking lot and the trail head is up the dirt road next to the Pupukea parking lot. We made the mistake of following the dirt road for too long and missed the trail marker for Kaunala so the recording is longer than it should be. The rest of the trail was in the forest which had some muddy spots here and there but nothing crazy. The trail is a little narrow in some areas with the foliage starting to grow in but the path is still visible for the most part. Overall it’s a relatively shaded trek with some nice views!

This is a nice nature trail. Pretty easy except for a few fallen trees, but nothing too difficult. It’s a loop. We actually went backwards and hiked up the road first and passed the first entrance to the trail. Luckily a couple coming down the road told us where the trail comes out. Going this way was nice because there is some sun on the road and we went in the morning. I would not have wanted to be on the road at noon when we were done. Too hot. The road is a workout for sure. Up up. Very cool though. INCREDIBLE views of the north shore and Kaena Point up there. The road is concrete then gravel and then look for a yellow gate on the left. You go through that gate and eventually you will see ribbons for the trail. (If you are going backwards like we did). The rest is really cool. Not too tough anywhere and the valleys and nature are beautiful. You easily cross a stream a few times. The weather was dry for a while before we went so I think there may be more mud and some more nice steams if there had been some rain before we went. Great for dogs and families and anyone, really. Will definitely be back. Great workout.

Different trails for different moods. This is a great trail if you just want to get away from everything! It was easy to do alone. It was marked by pink or purple ribbons at all of the right places. A very nice way to take in all of the smells, sights, and sounds of nature. A few down trees, but nothing difficult to navigate at all. The 5 miles took about 2 hours at a comfortable pace. The road part was actually so unique and wonderful! It was an unexpected surprise! I felt like I was on an elaborate movie set or something! Really fun trail!

Fairly easy hike. First half of the hike is beautiful. Lots of trees and foliage. Second half is an abandoned road. Kind of a disappointment after being on the trail. Nice that it was not crowded.

Great trail and hike. As other comments mention, the second half of the hike is on a road, however, this should not deter you!! It’s an abandoned road with lots of greenery and more like a extra wide path. This hike took us just over 2 hours at a decent pace. Can be muddy in some spots so just be mindful of that. THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE.

Love this trail! Something different..closed paved road to forest area. Most of hike is shady. A few areas where it's hot. Water, water, snack, mosquito repellent!!

1st half of the Trail was excellent. Traveling in really cool spots with challenging terrain. 2nd half was a road walk. Kind of a bummer after getting to the top of the landing zone. But 1st half was certainly worthy of your time.
