This is a very pretty and not too difficult trail. A section of it is an old paved service road but still you're treated to nice bamboo forests on either side of the road. There are some off shoots along the trail so be sure to keep alert and not get lost.

Nice hike with a few light muddy spots. Nice variety of plant environments and long steep paved downhill at the end.

HikingGreat!

I added on this segment when I probably shouldn’t have (it was getting dark), but it pleasantly surprised me: beautiful mountain views, plus you’ll get glimpses of windward side ocean and the Ewa area. Trails are in good condition (follow AllTrails map). I was scared at one point on the access road because I heard a big dog barking/snarling, and I know there have been attacks in the Tantalus area, but the pup was behind a fence so it was fine.

Really lush and adventurous feeling. Some very muddy portions but nothing that I slipped and fell in. If you walk down the paved portion, consider grabbing a walking stick from the bamboo, as there is potential to slide there.

Very pretty and easy trail. Not too much elevation. Lots of spider webs at one point but I think I walked through them all so should be good for the next people for a while. Part of it is paved but still nice bamboo forests on either side of the road. Took the wrong trail at one point because there are a few that cross through. Use AllTrails app if you don’t want to get lost.

A little muddy post last night’s rain but overall very pleasant. Not too many people on the trail for a Saturday!

Great even with lots of mud. The utility road is extremely steep and somewhat annoying

I enjoyed this loop trail more than I expected to. I’ve always liked the beauty of Kalawahine trail but was unsure of the paved portion of the loop. While I won’t be doing any gushing over a paved road, the old service road is interesting on its own and at times there were surprisingly good ocean views. Most of the trail is good for jogging. My puppy also approved of the trail.

I think this trail is incorrectly labeled. The majority of the hike is just Kalawahine and Manoa Cliff Trail, you only traverse about 10% of the Puu Ohia trail and it doesn’t even take you to the Mount Tantalus Lookout. I would call this “Kalawahine to Telephone Road Loop”. Having done all of the tantalus trails, the only new segment of this trail to me is the Telephone Road part which was actually kinda cool, some old paving the entire way! Kalawahine is in full bloom, so much more verdant than it was in the spring! It took me just about an hour to do the loop. Quite muddy, prepare to get dirty! Very few people on the trails today. The tantalus trails are actually still open despite the C&C covid hiking restriction since they are out of the jurisdiction.

First to Review

This trail should probably be deleted and re-recorded. There’s an issue with the route where it has you walking a superfluous leg along Tantalus Road (from the lot below Nahuina Trail up to the Pu’u O’hia lot (and back)). Also, why would you take the Tantalus access road when you can hike up the Pu’u O’hia Trail, down Manoa Cliff Trail and back along the Kalawahine Trail?
