The Diamond Head Summit trail hike is likely the most popular hike in Oahu, and for good reason. While fairly steep, this easy hike starts from the middle of the Diamond Head volcanic crater and climbs about 500 feet up the side to the top of the rim where panoramic views await. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. The Diamond Head crater is more than 3,500 feet in diameter and is part of the Hawaiian volcano chain from more than a half million years ago (don't worry, it has been dormant for at least 150,000 years now). The crater is also called "Le'ahi," which means "brow of the tuna" in Hawaiian. It got the name Diamond Head almost 200 years ago when British sailors believed there were diamonds in the side of the crater. Although none were found, the name stuck. The trail was built in 1908 as part of the Oahu coastal defense system. The World War II bunkers on top now support antennas used by the government. The trail starts on a paved path before climbing several steep switchbacks leading to the first set of steep stairs. After the stairs you will climb through a tunnel and then climb up another set of stairs before reaching the bunkers at the top of the rim. Once on top you can climb up to the top of the bunkers for 360-degree views of the island and Pacific Ocean, with Waikiki not too far away. The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:30 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time.

This trail has amazing views. Wasn’t so much a hike but stairs. Only negative for me is it’s way too crowded.

This was a great hike for people of all ages. If you are just a little fit, you may enjoy koko head more.

Hiked Diamond Head this morning at 7am. Beautiful views but it is not really much of a hike. It is really more of a line at Disney that goes up steeply with lots of stairs. To say it was crowded would be an understatement. I don’t think we were more than 3 feet from someone else the entire time. There were tons of kids playing music (annoying) and families jumping the fences to go take pics on the pillbox at the Summit. All in all, still glad we did it but would never do it again.

it's super crowded, and there are stairs. the view at the top is really nice (Honolulu and the water,) but the crowds...ugh. refreshments for sale at the base of the hike!

So crowded at the top I couldn’t even use a selfie stick. Do the hike as early as possible if at all.

It’s a must do! $5 carload. Easy walk up. Stairs and tunnel. Stunning views. People in sandals so don’t worry but busy. Crowded early.

If you are looking for beautiful views with minimal effort and little time to spare, and don’t mind heavy crowds, this will fit the bill. I expected it to be crowded, but not as bad as it was. We hiked on a Sunday morning and were in a line the whole time. That viral picture of the standstill line to the top of Everest now resonates with me in a newfound way. This was a one-and-done for me.

Good for beginners but super crowded. The view at the top is alright but nothing compared to some of the ridge hikes on Oahu. There’s very little shade as well so bring lots of sunscreen.

Hiked this trail with my best friends on our annual “Girls Trip” back in January and it was so beautiful. Especially for my first time in the most exquisite Hawai’i. Would highly recommend to everyone! Mahalo!

Just way too crowded. Good views, if you can squeeze in. Koko Head and others can give a similar view. It is an easy walk though.

I like this hike a lot. I did it between study sessions for my chemistry class and it was a good way to get my heart rate up. Beautiful views of Waikiki and inland a bit. I wore running shoes but several people I saw were wearing flip flops, so it’s not a hard hike at all. Wear sunblock though cause there’s no shade.

It’s usually packed with tourists so get there early if you can. Hike is not too strenuous and there are resting points along the way. Great for families. You can’t beat the views of Waikiki from the top!

Hiked this on July 4 and it was VERY busy; like a strange kind of Mecca For tourists. The bunkers at the top overlooking Honolulu were awesome!

A must for a quick view of the surroundings and to see the old war bunkers. Let's say it's way too touristic for my taste and far too many people to enjoy. Going there in winter should be less crunchy

Beautiful views from the top, but super crowded. :/ we got there around 7 am and the parking lot was already full. Worth it, but too many people to be amazing.

Great views, but it's too crowded. I also prefer trails to paved roads. It didn't feel in touch with nature. minimal shade except for a few tunnels, so look out on a hot day.

Fun hike with fantastic views as a reward for all the stairs. The tunnel was a nice surprise. To extend it you can walk all the way back to town!

Very easy hike! Be prepared for the stairs at the end, there is an easier way up if you veer to the left on your way up. VERY crowded! We got there at 6 am and there was already a lot of people there, even some coming down from the top. Would recommend getting there as early as possible. No shade! Bring lots of water!

This trail offers great views of Honolulu! It isn't difficult, but depending on the time of day the sun can be brutal. I would suggest going early in the morning and not at noon like I did. There are many stairs that you have to climb to finally get to the top and one short tunnel you have to pass through. It is heavily trafficked, so you may have to adjust your speed to other hikers. The views are awesome and there is a helicopter pad that is great for pictures!

Great trail that starts inside an old volcano. There are a lot switchbacks and steep steps when you near the summit. The views at the top are beautiful!!

I read a lot of comments saying he was disappointed! And I approve that having known that it was only that, I would not have been there and I would have priority on other hike than thisLui! VERY touristy, parking often full ($ 5), arrive early! But seen + \ - awesome for those who hike bcp !!!

An enjoyable hike in the middle of an urban setting. The views are spectacular, but the trail is very busy. Parking can be a hastle, but just ask to wait and you should have a spot in 10 minutes. Bring water as there isn't any after the trailhead.

nice walk for someting in the middle of a big city. Think about going at opening because already at 8 am parking lot was full and crowded in the trails to the summit.
