All Hawaii State Parks have been closed due to COVID19. For more information, see their site here: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/oahu/diamond-head-state-monument/ The Diamond Head Summit trail hike is likely the most popular hike in Oahu, and for good reason. While fairly steep, this easy hike starts from the middle of the Diamond Head volcanic crater and climbs about 500 feet up the side to the top of the rim where panoramic views await. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. The Diamond Head crater is more than 3,500 feet in diameter and is part of the Hawaiian volcano chain from more than a half million years ago (don't worry, it has been dormant for at least 150,000 years now). The crater is also called "Le'ahi," which means "brow of the tuna" in Hawaiian. It got the name Diamond Head almost 200 years ago when British sailors believed there were diamonds in the side of the crater. Although none were found, the name stuck. The trail was built in 1908 as part of the Oahu coastal defense system. The World War II bunkers on top now support antennas used by the government. The trail starts on a paved path before climbing several steep switchbacks leading to the first set of steep stairs. After the stairs you will climb through a tunnel and then climb up another set of stairs before reaching the bunkers at the top of the rim. Once on top you can climb up to the top of the bunkers for 360-degree views of the island and Pacific Ocean, with Waikiki not too far away. The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:30 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time.

There are two places to park. You can park outside the gate and walk about a half mile and pay $1 for the admission fee. Or you can drive into the park for a $5 parking fee.

Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, 2270 Kalakaua Avenue, Suite 801 , Honolulu, HI, 96815, Phone: 800-GOHAWAII, Fax: 808-924-0290

This trail is exposed and there is no water on the trail, so make sure to bring sunscreen, a water bottle and a hat on especially sunny days. There are refreshment stands and restrooms near the parking lot, where the trail begins. --- Hours Daily 6am-6pm Last entrance is at 4:30pm; gates lock at 6pm --- Admission Parking $5 Walk ins $1

Directions from Honolulu: Diamond Head State Monument is located immediately east of Honolulu along Diamond Head Road. It is possible to take a bus from the city to this site. The trailhead is located on the crater floor.

Wife and I did this hike on our honeymoon in Feb. 2016. We hiked up to watch sunrise, it was very pretty, but it is definitely touristy and was very crowded. We really enjoyed it, and I would recommend it as a fun thing to do.

Did this as a tourist (obviously), with 0 previous hiking experience. Definitely was way harder than expected at the time. Now that I’ve started hiking at home, I would probably pick some other hikes around O’ahu to do instead, but I’ll always recommend this one. It’s a must-do if you’re from the mainland.

Definitely the touristy thing to do, which meant it was extremely crowded when I went last year. Had to wait in line to park. There is no shade and you’re going uphill for most of the hike, a lot of the trail is narrow and you are constantly dodging people with their huge families and crying babies. Please don’t take your kids here it’s not fun for them. The view at the top is of Waikiki Beach and it’s nice but not worth it at all. There are way better hikes on Oahu.

Not much I can add to this: more or less worth the hype. Everyone will tell you, of course, that you've gotta expect a lot of people! This is an attraction in addition to a hike. Lots of stairs if you're not sure-footed.

This can be very busy! I would advise going as early as possible. The views are breathtaking but difficult to see if it is busy.

Did this as a sunrise hike for my birthday March 2019. It was very crowded as people had the same idea. I didnt make it to the summit before the sun started rising, but I did stopped at a lookout point.

This trail is mainstream! It’s a good intro to Honolulu. We try to do this hike often and record our fastest time, but you can’t get an accurate one when there are a lot more people on the trail.

Very busy trail but it's worth it. You can't have been on Oahu and not have hiked Diamond Head. The switch back trail offers a pretty easy path up the mountain.

If you're into hiking and don't have a ton of time on Oahu, this place is indeed a classic but crowded with tourists and not really worth how long it takes to navigate around everybody. For more impressive views and a serious workout, consider a dawn hike at Koko Head.

Easy trail. I bring every out of town visitor here because it’s iconic. Can’t get better views of Waikiki (unless you’re in a helicopter). Suitable for all ages and almost all fitness levels. There is a section where you have to walk through a tunnel. My claustrophobic mother did not like that. No dogs. Pay to park or enter on foot. IG: @pieandthesky
