The Diamond Head Summit trail hike is likely the most popular hike in Oahu, and for good reason. While fairly steep, this easy hike starts from the middle of the Diamond Head volcanic crater and climbs about 500 feet up the side to the top of the rim where panoramic views await. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. The Diamond Head crater is more than 3,500 feet in diameter and is part of the Hawaiian volcano chain from more than a half million years ago (don't worry, it has been dormant for at least 150,000 years now). The crater is also called "Le'ahi," which means "brow of the tuna" in Hawaiian. It got the name Diamond Head almost 200 years ago when British sailors believed there were diamonds in the side of the crater. Although none were found, the name stuck. The trail was built in 1908 as part of the Oahu coastal defense system. The World War II bunkers on top now support antennas used by the government. The trail starts on a paved path before climbing several steep switchbacks leading to the first set of steep stairs. After the stairs you will climb through a tunnel and then climb up another set of stairs before reaching the bunkers at the top of the rim. Once on top you can climb up to the top of the bunkers for 360-degree views of the island and Pacific Ocean, with Waikiki not too far away. The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:30 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time.

Great path and trail! Crowded but great views from the top and lookout points.

Yes it's crowded... But it's worth it go early! Being water. If you are claustrophobic run the through the tunnel!

We went late in the afternoon and it was calm. Highly recommend turning right after you get through the tunnel, if only for the bragging rights!

Fun, short hike. Arrived at sunrise and the trail was already becoming full of hikers. Most people were courteous but one family disregarded the “no drones” regulation and upset a number of hikers by ruining the morning quiet. Views are spectacular and worth the lack of solitude.

One my favorite hikes in Oahu. It’s one the most beautiful views I have ever seen. Not to mention you meet a ton of amazing Japanese foreigners. I spoke to quite a few of them in Japanese. Overall it was an amazing experience!

Very simple, far too many people. If you are slightly adventurous it has a lot of other trains more interesting. Nice view of Waikiki, a must the first time. Nothing more.

Very full at 7 o'clock in the morning.

Absolutely gorgeous views of the city and shores. Be sure and go early in the morning. Parking ($5) fills up quickly, but they have a “waiting line” for vehicles as cars exit. Also, go early you’ll avoid the lines folks who are unprepared for hiking.

Despite the heavy traffic, it is a nice short hike with great views at the top. I agree with earlier posts: bring water and wear proper shoes that allow for a hike up a mountain. I think some people underestimate having proper attire and hydration because of the popularity and length of the hike. Overall, a nice opportunity to get some exercise.

Fun mostly paved trail. Great views of Oahu at the summit. A little heavy on traffic for my taste. The amount of people on a Saturday morning made it tough to go at the pace we would have liked to. The Saturday farmers market at the community college at the bottom of the trail was a nice stop for a bite after.

The trail leading up to the top is in good shape. I ran up it and had no problem with the Conditions. It’s probably one of my most memorials views on a hike. The top is absolutely worth visiting.

This hike was awesome. Bring enough water to carry. Dress light (according to weather conditions of course). I can't stress this enough, but WEAR THE PROPER YET COMFORTABLE SHOES. There are a few stops on the way to the top, so if you need to rest. You can. And last but not least. The views are amazing! So if you need to snap a photo, please be courteous to the people walking up/ by. They want to enjoy it as much as you do.. Oh, and transportation. Parking there is 5 bucks. Or you can Take the Trolley. 10 bucks I believe is a one way trip from Waikiki to Diamond head and vise versa.

This is a narrow paved path with lots of stairs. Well worth the climb to some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever experienced.

Good to see and do while in Waikiki...great views and history. But be ready for a crowded trek to the top. Wasn’t able to park in the parking lot, found a spot about .60 miles away though at the bottom of the hill.

Nice easy iconic hike. We did this hike with the 1.5 year old in an ergo and it was a fun time for all.

It’s got good views. Some reviews say that the trail is uneven, but it’s nothing to be concerned about. There’s not loose rocks or other things to worry about, and theres a handrail the whole way up. I would come as early as possible (maybe even the to see the sunrise from the top) because it gets crowded fast. The dole whip at the end was delicious!

PACKED trial but worth it for the views!! We set out from our hotel on Waikiki beach and looped around diamond head before going up. Then on way down went the other way around the headland. A decent 12km journey in total.
