Hiking the Waihee ridgeline up in the Maui mountains is dramatic and always scenic. This hike in West Maui Forest Reserve promises lush scenery, great valley views and some dramatic ridge-line hiking. A well groomed ridge trail suitable for trail runners and hikers of all skill levels. Elevation gains by clean switch-backs and stairs spaced apart by spots of flat terrain. Good views available if hiking on a clear day but expect moderate sun exposure. As on the windward side of all Hawaiian islands, you're more likely to be in for wet weather and muddy conditions. But it's not all that bad, since this means waterfalls are plentiful, the vegetation is greener and the cooler conditions make for a nice comfortable hike.

One of my favorite trails in Maui. The up hill towards the top was a bit of a challenging but worth the view.

Trail is more of a moderate than hard hike. Slippery in spots, but not a problem if you have good shoes. Completed in two and a bit hours with a friend who is not experienced, so we took a ton of breaks for pictures ect. Lovely hike... Great views!

Excellent Hike! we got there a little later in the day, around 2. Was able to get a parking spot in the lot, easy. A bit of a drizzle off and on and cloudy, so not much of a view at the top. none the less, it was a cool feeling being in the clouds and knowing we were on a ridge, and there were plenty of pretty things to see. my watch clocked just under 4.5 miles from the parking lot. Steep all the way up. came across two muddy spots where other hikers were sliding and falling. Step carefully and intentionally with good trail shoes. Glad we hiked this one.

Great hike. First stretch out of the parking lot is tough uphill with no shade but it quickly evens out.

Challenging only in that it is steep. We started this hike around 3 pm and it was lovely. Plenty of shade. Reviews that say no shade must be from folks who parked at the lower parking lot. It is about 3/4 miles from lower lot to trail head and all exposed. But trail itself has plenty of shade. Park at the upper lot! All Trails a bit inaccurate: distance RT was 5 miles on my Fitbit, not 4 miles. Also, elevation did not have a dip at the end as shown in AllTrails. Trail ends in a lovely 360 view. Your reward after steep climb is awesome views and much easier walking on the way down. Waterfall: there is a bench about a mile in from which you can see a waterfall in the distance. The hike does not go to a waterfall. If you can avoid, do not approach from the west. The road is VERY narrow and winding. We had trouble at one point: too narrow for cars to pass in both directions.

Muddy(you know cause it’s a tropical island). Nothing more than a medium difficulty hike, great view if the clouds clear. But still really Great Hike to do and the crowds are minimal by Maui standards. Go early to avoid heavy clouds, and spot some awesome helicopter action.

get there early so you can park in the upper parking lot. Beautiful views all the way up. View of double waterfall at first bench to the right. Little muddy in places. Great hike.

really awesome trail, do it in the morning. well maintained. switchbacks got kind of annoying toward the end. Make sure to say hi to Murray the Mongoose at the very top by the picnic table.

Great trail. Well maintained with great views. Be prepared for very little shade and a good amount of elevation gain. There’s a nice picnic table at the top that would make for a great lunch spot.

Very good hike. Steeper than anticipated but worth it for the multiple views!

First, this was not moderate- this was HARD. Terrain is uneven and can be slippery. The views are incredible. Here’s what I suggest for an easier time: Sunscreen Hat Water Get there before 8 am as it gets very hot and the parking fills up quickly. The walk from the parking lot to the trail head is no joke. If you can’t make it up there, this hike is not for you.

Probably one of my favorite hikes on Maui, but it never fails to surprise me how sneakily difficult this trail is. Once you get to the actual ridge, it's a steep set of switchbacks that seems to go on for eternity. Worth it for the view at the top!

Lots of liquid sunshine today, but no lightning! Today, the hike was for exercise, not so much for the view, but nicely maintained trail, as promised, and well worth the effort, in spite of the weather. Lots of beauty all around.

Great hike! Some trail maintenance completed, very slippery in spots that haven’t had maintenance in a while. Would NOT recommend attempting this hike with flip flops or sandals.

absolutely incredible hike, that said, 'moderate'?... not quite. My wife and I are in our early 50's and relatively fit and this was a sufficiently challenging hike to make us order in for dinner tonight :-). I would caution taking young kids or older folks on this hike, esp. if you are planning on going to the top. That said, if you are reasonably fit (or young, whichever works), grab your hiking boots and water bottle and spend the ~ 2 hrs. to do this one. You won't be sorry.

At an age of 60+ a moderate rating was a stretch. Lovely views all along the trail. Don't forget to stop and look behind you now and again. Well worth the effort.

nice little hike. well kept trail with some amazing views of the valley and the ocean. parking space is ok, but not huge. at the top can be a bit cooler and more windy that at the parking lot.

Beautiful views!! Steady uphill, but well worth the effort! Definite running shoes or hiking boots. Well worth the time! Will do again!!

Cut your toenails for the way down and start early. Hike starts with steep incline driveway of concrete. that thins out the crowds! if you are lucky enough for a clear morning the views are amazing and you are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment. There is beautiful shaded trail part of the way, steep stairs, and a combination of groomed gravel, sliding dust and mud. I've taken the trail in heat, rain, clouds, and boo for me: mightily hungover. It is goregous but challenging for me late 50s) everytime but always inspired every time.

Beautiful views on the way up and down, cloudy at the top, a few muddy and slick areas. Was cool and windy the morning we did it. I wore running shoes but wish I had day hikers or trail running shoes for better tread on descent.

I would say that this hike is difficult. the mounted is constant and asserte abrupt but still accessible. In sunny weather plan to put cream! the payasage is breathtaking throughout the climb, which deserves a 5/5. We find ourselves even higher than the helico of tourists who pass between the mountain slopes

Great hike, but really challenging in some parts due to the incline, especially right at the start. Nice views halfway, just after the lookout. The trail is well maintained and there’s a picnic table at the top.

Absolutely love this trail! It’s been my favorite on all the islands so far. Well maintained! There’s a lookout of the valley with a beautiful river running through and it’s one of the most beautiful peaceful things you will ever see! The top is cool too as youre in the clouds, can’t see much but it’s an interesting feeling. Highly recommend!!
