Road to Hana Scenic Drive is a 46.4 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Kahului, Maui, Hawaii that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for nature trips and scenic driving and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This should be on everyone's short list of scenic drives. This drive takes you through mostly lush tropical rainforest hugging the steep slopes of Maui's northeast shore. It is slow and winding with amazing views as you pass the many curves and bridges (most just one lane wide). Please be considerate with the locals, especially if you are on a vacation mode, be mindful that people live here and this road might be the only way to access places. Please respect the signed yield areas and pay attention to the places where it says; DON'T PARK, DON'T STOP, DON'T SIT ON THE WALL!
Loved the Road to Hana! The views were spectacular and it will take you a few days to see them all. A few spots are terrifying as they are on the side of sheer cliffs and the locals come flying around the turns. The roads are very small and really can only fit a single car, yet it’s a two way road. The end near the National park turns into more of a dirt road so it can be rough in a few spots. My advice, stay attentive, if you want to see something have the courtesy to stop instead of slowing down, worth every winding, terrifying minute!
Beautiful drive with tons of trails to hike of all lengths. So much to see. We stopped to swim with waterfalls and saw the most beautiful views we’ve ever seen. Download the Road to Hana Gypsy Guide on your phone. It works without cell service and you can highlight the stops you want to make and pause the audio when you choose to stop. Make sure you leave early and spend the whole day. Lots of people turn around at Hana and go back, but we leave around 8am and go all the way around. The views past Hana are a whole different scenarios with cliffs and pastures of green. It’s peaceful and not crowded at all. The backside past Hana is all scenery, not much to stop at unless you do like we did and just stand in awe.
Great day trip and it was very helpful to have the Road to Hana audio app by Gypsy Traveler. We stopped as much as we could and enjoyed some bbq along the way. We went all the way to the 7 pools and hiked Pipiwai to the Waimoku falls which was outstanding. Tons of great short hikes all the way through and the only one that didn’t pan out was Twin Falls since it was raining hard during our trip and we were not able to cross the river. I would recommend this trip rain or shine.
awesome drive but left the driving to a tour guide. went all around the volcano which was so cool. I could not have driven it and enjoyed it much would be too focused on safety. it is a challenging drive. many great sites as well. check any guide book for the ones that resonate with you.
Nothing special, there are 3-4 spots to view the coast and ocean, but there is no parking or even turnover near by! So if stopped there it’s just for 2 minutes to make a quick photo and continue driving. There are 7-8 stops with waterfalls, but most of them just creeks. It’s exhausting, it’s not a hike, it’s a drive! PLEASE PEOPLE PULL OVER IF YOU SEE A FEW CARS BEHIND YOU! REMEMBER LOCALS - ITS ONLY ONE ROAD TO GET TO PLACES FOR THEM!
read ahead or get an audio tour. the road is narrow but very well maintained. yes there are some lane bridges but if you can read the signs and follow directions, this road is safer than some commute to work. many stops along the way for activity so do your research. definitely do the full loop rather than turning back at Hana. the south end is beautiful too though the road is less maintained and harder to drive. oh and if you can't handle the speed or don't have the skills to tackle this, turn around. don't put yourself and others at risk. know your limits. If you're being tail gated, pull over ASAP. there's usually a spot to pull over every mile or so. don't piss off the local.
This drive was definitely breathtaking but make sure you head out early, otherwise there won’t be parking at many of the trails. Also, the locals can make the drive extremely unpleasant as many will fly around the one-lane curves and ride your ass if you’re going the speed limit or even 5 over. I can’t tell you how many people I saw going 30-40 mph in a 15-20 around sharp curves and one lane bridges. Extremely dangerous. On our way back down (when we were going about 5 over the speed limit), one woman was riding our ass and wailing on the horn and swearing at me out her window and when I pulled over (NOT at a turnout because I couldn’t get to one quick enough to let her pass) she pulled up and stopped her car next to ours and started threatening us. So. Be warned.
One of the best scenic drives in the world! You can get stomach ache here though.
HEED TO THE LOCALS TOURISTS!!!! DON'T YOU KNOW THE LOCAL RESPECT AND LAWS!? NO. BECAUSE YOU DO NOT RESEARCH BEFORE YOU COME HERE. YOU JUST COME. YOU JUST DO WHAT YOU LIKE. RESPECT LOCALS, PULL TO THE SIDE AND LET THEM PASS. WE DO NOT WANT TO BE STUCK BEHIND YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE ON VACATION WITH NO AMBITIONS NOR COMMON SENSE. THIS AIN'T THE MAINLAND. WELCOME TO HAWAII, NOW GO HOME!!!
The Hana Highway! This should be on everyone's short list of scenic drives. 64 total miles (approximately 52 from Kahului to Hana) through mostly lush tropical rainforest hugging the steep slopes of Maui's northeast shore. It is slow and winding with amazing views as you pass the 600+ curves and 59 bridges (most just one lane wide). I have done it twice...both times a number of years ago. But it is something you don't forget. Don't miss Waianapanapa State Park, its trails and wonderful black sand beach. But the highlight for me was swimming in the clear blue freshwater cave pools (just be prepared for the very cold water that has flowed down from Haleakala). Hana also has a red sand beach and the beautiful Hamoa Beach, where we boogie boarded in large waves. Great memories!
The road to Hana is the best Maui has to offer...54 one lane bridges and 280 hairpin turns. There are mudslides and flash floods often, so be weary in the rain. Hana is absolute heaven: bamboo forests, black sand beach, red sand beach, lava tubes, and waterfalls. Fruit grows everywhere here.
This is one of those must do items if you're in Maui and have the time. It's an all day adventure but well worth it. I'm surprised again that no one has reviewed this incredible drive. We rented a car and drove this in 92. They of course tell you when you rent a car that you are not to go to Hana, but everyone does anyway, so don't let that stop you. The drive there will take you almost 3 hours as it is a winding road like no other. Take your time and enjoy the views. The tropical forests to the right of you are thick and almost impossible to navigate thru on foot. The ocean will be on your left the whole way there. You will cross 59 bridges and go around 620 curves!!. Hana is a neat little town far removed from the rest of Maui. The road does go all the way around if you wanted to do a loop, but the day we did it, it was washed out beyond Hana due to recent rains. We went as far as Wailua Falls and turned around there. What an incredible drive this is though. Check it out!
