Olivine Pools Trail is a 0.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.
Short descent from the highway to several saltwater pools surrounded by lava rock.
Hands down my favorite spot on Maui (well, O'heo Gulch ain't too shabby either). My wife and I are in our 50s. Scrambled down no problem, the pools were crowded with families, couples, teenagers, little kids. Sure, it's nature and you'd best know how to swim and you have to use good judgment ... but c'mon people, little kids were diving off the rocks into the pools with the big old Pacific just feet away. It's not the Queen's Bath on Kaua'i by any stretch -- there you can die easily. It is a must-do for me on Maui.
Go down close to the bottom with caution and common sense. if the ground is wet, it is for a reason. Don't try to swim.
High surf means you absolutely cannot go in the pools. It was worth it to scramble around and watch the waves pulverize the rocks, but did not venture to wet rocks. Be super careful here. There are memorials for folks who died. Do not be one of them. But have fun it’s cool as hell.
We didn’t go all the way down to ocean level as that requires a level of risk we didn’t want to take. (Rogue waves are possible at any time). We did walk down far enough to have a look from the top of them. A beautiful spot, but absolutely be careful here (even on calm days). Traveled March 2018.
Another magical Maui spot. Many signs remind you that vigilance is required, rogue waves can knock you down, drag you away. It was a very calm day when we visited. In fact, there was a happy couple who were high on mushrooms and had been there for hours. The red haired woman was extremely sunburned, I often wonder how she felt the next day. Bring a hat!
Beautiful but requires heightened awareness at all times please. As a local, I am aware of the devastation that can happen and only went down because most of the rocks around the pools were dry. The right side of the wall (if you’re looking towards the water) was crashing and there was a pool on that side which I think is popular in pics I’ve seen. It was a definite NO for us, beauty to watch safely up top :) Unpredictable waves and take all precautions to enjoy this place. Watch the blowhole but please don’t stand over it.
Trail itself down to the pools is just ok, but once you get down to the pools there is plenty of fun exploring/scrambling/photo ops. Most of the rock is rough and has good traction, but beware some some are smooth and slippery. Shoes with traction recommended over flip flops, and be mindful of the tide/waves
We parked in the main area and hike down a little ways until there’s a grave marker. Go left and from there it’s very very steep. Be sure to remember the way since it is not clearly marked. The pools are amazing. Great views.
