Although the area is burned out, like many others mentioned, this is still a great hike; at least in the morning for sunrise. The view of the sun coming up over Haleakalā was incredible. Good workout also.

Went to the right and used service road up for a 6 mile loop. Very steep on service road. Rough on knees on way down. Recommend hiking boots for sure.

Went up the service road after the fire. Very steep up and 2400 ft elevation. Charred remains and little coverage from the sun on the way down. Wear hiking boots as there are loose rocks

If you’re a hiker this is moderate, if you’re a tourist beginner this is hard. So don’t do it because you probably won’t wear hiking shoes and you’ll hurt yourself. There’s lots of rocks, very hard on the back and knees but it’s a great hike if you like being directly in the sun. Took me about an hour and a half to get up and down. I did it at sunset and it was beautiful and the windmills at the top are very powerful looking.

Very rocky/technical. Definitely wear hiking shoes. Breathtaking view. Very brown and very windy. We only went about halfway until we saw wind turbines and turned around. It was worth it. Open the gate and drive up. There is a good size lot before the trail. It was very windy, and the view of the island/Haleakala was really nice.

My husband and I are trying to do one hike every weekend while we are here for four months. This was our least favorite, and would not recommend. It was sprinkling the day we went, so the weather wasn’t that hot, which made it much nicer. Getting down was more difficult than going up because of all the rocks. There was a decent amount of mud in some areas, but that didn’t bother us. I would say this is a moderate hike, but it’s rated as hard.

Challenging technical trail with a lot of zigzagging and elevation change. It was very hot with little overhead cover (the wind was nice) - go early in the morning. The rocky bits that required careful footing were mostly at the ends of trail both there and back.

I did the whole trail from east to west (and back). The west part (NOT this one) is the nicest - probably not worth doing the east side. The trail is easy to follow, mostly mild incline. Also, not hard, more like moderate!

Not really hard, should be moderate. The east part is the best. Moderate incline

Mainly uphill for 2 miles. Amazing views. All the sweat, thirst, exhaustion worth it! Gorgeous views.

*Warning* high crime parking lots. I enjoyed this trail. It’s got great views of Maalaea Harbor. I parked in the lower lot, as the upper lot seemed too undulated for my low-to-the-ground car. My (door) car window was smashed. Nothing was in my car- but note to self- don’t lock the car on Maui! The policeman said that’s a common crime there, especially (even in the upper lot), but at all trailheads, in general. I’ll go again and hike over the ridge line next time! (You could also park down by the Carl’s Jr. that’s across the road.)

Didn't complete it as there was way to much rain and wind at the top. overall it would be a nice trail on a sunny day.
