Getting There

From Wailea, follow Wailea Alanui Drive to the south. It will become Makena Alanui Drive, that comes to an end, and it will now be Makena Road. Go past Big Beach and the road narrows along the coast. A short ways past a large bend in the road, you will see the signs welcoming you to Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve. This is where it gets a little tricky. You'll pass a popular cove for snorkeling that's about 100 yards from the signs you just passed. You are looking for "The Dumps". After about another 100 yards, you'll pass a long stone wall on your right, and you'll see a large gravel parking lot with bright yellow gates on your right. THIS is the parking lot you're looking for.

Easy walk. A little tough on the feet with loose lava rock. Good views of other island alone the way. Well marked trail with good parking.

Easy out and back with beautiful scenery of contrasted blue ocean over black lava. the water is so clear and beautiful and the gorgeous tropical fish are easy to spoke even if you aren't snorkeling. Easy and enjoyable. Go early, crowd builds.

Rocky, a little dangerous when ocean is upset. Be careful! The pavement of lava rocks is nice though. Cannot really snorkel since the ocean didn’t allow it. Saw some crabs.

Best shore snorkeling on Maui. Hundreds of multicolored fish and huge beds of colorful coral in turquoise clear water. Some days you do not need flippers so don’t use them. We saw almost every tourist “standing” and treading water with flippers in and kicking the coral which breaks it and kills it. Also only titanium dioxide sunscreen or a swim shirt. Other sunscreens kill the coral. I’m hoping this gem can be preserved. It’s rare.

Amazing spot for snorkeling, just like Honula Bay and Kapalua Bay were years ago. Coral and sealife in all its glory. Please respect the coral gardens and ocean life by wearing reef safe sunscreen and DO NOT STAND on the coral or take it!!! View it, respect it so many others can enjoy its beauty as well.

Walking

A perfect walk for our family of 5. Kids range from age 5 - 13 and enjoy hiking. Lovely soundscapes as waves rush out over the stones — we sat and listened for quite some time.

Gorgeous views of sandy cliffs, small ocean breakers, and breezy coastline. Nice relaxing walk more than a hike, but really gorgeous spot. Well it is Maui
