Put a pin in your map on this one. Considered "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific," the views will get inside you as one of natures most amazing sites on this big blue marble. Further up, the summit at Wai'ale'ale will grace you as you stand amongst one of the wettest places on earth. This is an amazingly wonderful "bucket list" item to see and experience with your own eyes. It was a wonderful drive to the summit, and along the way there was pull-off parking so a person could venture out on a day hike and explore some of the breathtaking trailheads Waimea Canyon had to offer. Unique to the island of Kauai was the "red dirt" trails that were all natural and packed hard and was as if you were walking on concrete; but make sure you have on your old trail clothes, because getting any of this red dirt on your clothing or gear meant a life-long reminder just what a jewel of an island this was. At the summit was like being in a cool misty fog because of Waialeale being one of the wettest spots on earth with an annual rainfall surpassing 450. The views from the lookout at this elevation and location were spectacular that is - if you had the time to wait on the waves of misty-fog-like deluges to open up and behold one of the islands great wonders.

Great lookout! My advice would be to drive all the way to the top of the road to the pu’u o kila lookout, then hit the other lookouts on the way down ending with this lookout. It’s awesome if you did any hikes to look back and see where you were. We hiked to the top of waipo’o falls and were able to see where we stood from this lookout. Also the canyon looked amazing at about 5:30 because the sun was about the set.

Very nice lookout, little to no effort required. Some of the quick car overlooks along the way to Koke’e can give you better vistas with waterfalls depending on the recent weather. The $5 parking is good for all the lookouts in the park, so hold onto it.

Not a trail, a lookout. It’s a 5 star lookout.

Not really a hike, but it’s a great overlook of what you can see in the hiking trail just up the road! It’s $5 for parking, but that ticket is good for parking anywhere in the park as a whole all day. There’a not a whole lot of shade, but there’s a bathroom and a fruit stand!

Not even really a hike! Just a beautiful viewpoint! $5 yo park the car. There was a fruit stand at the top (not sure if that is typical or not... probably so)

The overlook is exactly what it is, an overlook, not a hike/trail. The drive to the overlook does offer some great views and is a nice drive. It’s $5 to park at the overlook and the parking permit is only for about an hour and a half but that is plenty of time. The overlook offers a stunning view of the valley, but it’s is also a big tourist trap. The overlook is about an hour drive from Poipu, so if you’re staying on the southern end of Kauai it’s worth checking out but if you’re staying in the east or north end of the island it’s not worth the 1.5-2 hour drive.

Not sure I’d call this a hike. It is steeper than six feet and is paved the whole way with railing. You will have to pay to park here. Five dollars for the day. Good news is it covers other state parks for the day. Great observation spot. Such a beautiful canyon you can stare into all day. Keep in mind there are plenty of spots you can pull over on your way up and get some excellent views from.

Don’t go if it’s too cloudy. We could not see anything. But earlier lookout points are worth it!

This is a lookout, not a hike. You walk on cement to a lookout area and the views are spectacular! Everyone should see this area.

First time we went there was no visibility. Second time it was more clear, views comparable to Grand Canyon, in my opinion it was better because of greenery and waterfall.
