Getting There

Secluded beach great for surfing, swimming, fishing, and kayaking. Drive in or hike from a residential area near Kilauea. This beach lies at the end of an unmarked dirt road and is backed by forest and enclosed by rock walls from the old quarry, so it's often quite empty. It's a popular surfing and body boarding spot for locals and has a large calm area good for swimming, but should be avoided if the water is murky or churned up, as sharks and riptides have been identified here. (Also jellyfish.) The beach is also the outlet of the placid Kilauea River, which creates a freshwater pool behind the sandbar good for kids and fishing. The pool is also a good launch for kayaking up the Kilauea Stream. It's calm and a nice easy short paddle. Don't leave valuables unattended on the beach too long as this is also a spot frequented by Kauai's homeless.

Lot at end of dirt road.

From Highway 56, just east of Kilauea, turn north onto Wailapa Road (marked "No Outlet"). Go on about half a mile until you see an unmarked dirt road heading off to the left. Follow it another 3/4 mile to the parking lot at the end, in the trees just above the beach.

Hiking

The beach was pretty cool. A nice way to spend the afternoon but I would choose other hikes and beaches over this one. Fun to climb Over rocks and things on either side of the beach though.

Walking

Easy hike. Great beach and large fresh/salt water lake connected to the beach. Worth the trip if the weather is nice.
