Great hike this morning. Did this with my 3 kids (12, 10, 7) and they had no problem. There were a couple spots of mud, but it was easily passable. But it also hasn't rained much in the last 5+ days or so. After a big rain is probably a different story. The trail is probably 90% shaded. I'd recommend some bug spray if you don't want to get eaten. Overall, a great pretty easy hike with some nice views of the hillsides and a small waterfall at the end.

Left for this hike at 11am on a beautiful sunny day after a few days of rain. Trail was muddy, 2 inches in some parts. Took us 1 hour to get to the bridge & waterfall at the end, with a few stops for pictures. 2 hours to complete. Beautiful views and not too strenuous. HIGHLY recommend using one of the walking sticks leaned up against the tail info stand at the start.

Amazing views across the valley. Wasn’t mega muddy, a few waterlogged patches to traverse with care, but definitely don’t expect your boots to come back clean!

Muddy enough to dirty your shoes but not your ankles. Easy incline with enjoyable views of mountains.

Very good trail- but SUPER muddy in some places. Very slippery in a lot of places as well. We tried to get to the waterfall, but as we neared a curve in the trail it was so muddy we had to turn around and head back. Beautiful view- the mud is worth it!! If you’re going to do it, you should wear shoes you don’t care about. Behind the sign a little ways from the beginning there are walking sticks provided- grab one to help you through the mud! All in all, I would do the hike again, but wouldn’t wear my new shoes or shorts. (Also- parking access is quite limited)

Great little jaunt through the forest. Definitely muddy but not as bad as other trails we’ve done in the area. On the easy side of moderate. If you are looking for more of an adventure, take the smaller trail to the left after the picnic benches; it is a little overgrown but navigable, it goes along a ridge and is very pretty but it ends in a very steep (approx 50-60 degree) muddy slope that has a 6 foot cliff at the bottom as it connects back with the main trail. It is do-able but certainly gets the heart rate up. If you aren’t feeling frisky I recommend the normal root which is the larger trail on the right from the picnic tables. Overall nice way to start the day.

Wide trail that’s has an easy incline. Most of the elevation is accomplished driving to the parking spot (4-5 spots at the trailhead). As everyone else has pointed out, it is extremely muddy. The mud adds a fun dynamic to the hike.

Love this trail! Beautiful views of the valley! Wide trail, often muddy but very doable. We went a little way past the picnic tables then turned around when the mud got deeper. One of our fav Kauai hikes!

Definitely easy, gentle incline but nothing strenuous. Only small spots of mud, but easily avoidable. Was able to do the whole trail in slippas, so it wasn’t bad at all. Go early (ie before 10), takes about 30-45mins to get to the bridge, where the Kuilau Trail ends and the Moalepe Trail begins. Views are pretty great, the canopy is pretty awesome.

5*s for views on a clear day only. We had overcast skies but no low clouds, so it was perfect and we could see all the mountains. A few muddy spots but overall not muddy by Kauai standards. We started at 10:45 and had mostly shade and good lighting on the crater. I would rate it easy. We went past the picnic table, past the second view spot, past the junction at the bridge for 10 more minutes. Nice shady hiking but no more views. 5 miles r/t. Even if it were muddier, the grade was such that traction wouldn't have been too bad.

Amazing views. Ankle deep in mud at some points but worth it if you put some boots on! Relatively easy/short. Very peaceful as not too many people on the trail (parking lot only holds 4 ish cars)

Really pretty though muddy hike with beautiful views and a waterfall near the end. We hiked beyond the bridge where this trail officially ends onto another trail. The last 2 mile section of the add-on hike was not very scenic and leads to a parking area. However, we decided to take the road back to the beginning of the original trail instead of doing an out and back, making for a 11 mile hike that ended up including a walk through the sacred forest of the hindu temple. If you are wanting to hike just trail, I recommend turning around at the bridge.

This trail took us three hours to hike. It was shaded in parts with lots of amazing views! It was a perfect hike except VERY MUDDY the whole time, which means some parts required a bit of caution not to slip. None the less, I would still recommend going anyways!

Great hike. We went with two kids after the rain storm. It was really muddy but so worth it. Once you get to the picnic tables you can go right to a waterfall. If you want to go straight after the picnic tables you will go thru some bamboo to a ridge. The ridge is really slippery. To see the ridge is alot shorter distance.

We hiked this on 01/05. It is moderately muddy compared to other trails in the area. The first half of the trail is better than the last half. The view from the ridge was worth every bit of it. It’s definitely family friendly. Overall, I would consider this on the easy end of moderate in terms of difficulty and it’s great bang of your buck.
