This is one of the few trails that lets you view Waimea Canyon from the east looking west. To get to this trail, drive the 4WD Mohihi-Camp 10 Road - otherwise it will be a 4.6 mile walk on the 4WD road. The trailhead is well marked with the customary Na Ala Hele State Trail sign.

HikingGreat!

Great view relatively easy ridge trail. The camp road was clear. There was some tree blocking the road 1/4 mile before the trail head but 10 minutes with a hand saw and we were past it. At the river crossing about 0.25 miles down the trail there is a fallen tree near trail which is just to the left of the fallen tree. Wasn't obvious where the trail was from across the river. You will need a 4x4 truck or jeep to ford the Kawaikoi Stream but there was a subaru that had made it to the kawaikoi camp.

Parked the rental SUV at the Kawaikoi Camp picnic area (which is at the Pihea Trail trail head) and rode a rental mountain bike - through Kawaikoi stream - to the Kohua Ridge trail head. The trail was fine except that a large tree had fallen right where the trail crosses Mohihi Stream...so it wasn't obvious (or easy) crossing the stream. The trail resumes directly across the stream. No one had done the trail in quite a while...no boots prints and lots of spider webs and downed branches...but it's a good trail all the way to the obvious end (photo)...with awesome views across to the west side of Waimea Canyon (photo). My AllTrails recording includes the bike ride to the trailhead (photo) and some crazy glitch (evidently caused by phone battery problems).

As of 9/20/19 the 4x4 road leading to the trail is impassable due to a very large downed tree that also took out some power lines. In order to make it past you would maybe be able to crawl through, but with the power line also down it wasn't worth the risk for us.

Requires 4WD to get to trailhead. Awesome payoff view of Waimea Canyon from opposite side most people don’t experience. Sometimes a bit overgrown but easily passable. Done this hike several times and always had trail to ourselves. One of the best bang for your buck hikes on Kauai if you have a 4x4.

First to Review

Excellent hike and among Waimea Canyon's best trails!! Make sure to follow rocks across stream (no bridge) just past 0.25 mile marker because trees and bushes are obscuring trail on the other side.
