Hiking

The road to the beach is steep going down and back up. We are avid hikers and we were able to maintain a steady pace going up without stopping or getting too winded. For those without as much endurance or stamina, just take breaks, take your time, bring water, keep moving. For crossing the water, it’s very doable (if it hasn’t been raining as we understand it) but it’s waaaaay easier if you have sandals that strap and a trekking pole or stick to help balance. It can be quite painful without sandals as your feet slip and wedge in between rocks. Ouch. We saw many ppl struggling across and falling who didn’t have sandals or poles. The views are beautiful. Really nice area.

HikingGreat!

Absolutely amazing. Steep hike down (and back up). I felt it was completely doable though. Saw people of all ages, from kids to elderly, hiking up and down the trail. The beach, trees, flowers, wild horses, and beautiful valley is well worth it.

Insanely good. Be prepared for some river crossing, muddy paths and some steep climbs and descents. And of course amazing views

Hiking

Extremely worthwhile. The walk down and up is very rigorous, but the sounds are amazing and the beach is beautiful. If you walk to the far edge you will be able to see the falls in the valley and if you continue up the other side you will see it even better. The trail up the other side leads to some beautiful piney groves and very large trees full of bird song. There is no view from the top of the hill at the far side of the canyon, but it’s worth the trip for the tranquility. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Much of the trail is exposed. If you want a closer view of the waterfall continue down the road at the end. You cannot go to the falls edge as it is not open to the public.

Beautiful views, black sand beach and waterfalls in the distance. Hike is super steep, paved road, 25 degrees or more in places and would be tough with younger kids. Ocean way to rough to swim.

Walking

Some of the most stunning views. Hike down a steep paved path to views of the waterfall and then back to the beach. Disappointed we we not able to cross the water inlet to reach Kings trail head and hike on a dirt path. Saw many people on 4x4’s just drive down to the beach on the path. I think crossing over the 20 foot water inlet and hiking the Kings Trail is a must for a better hike . The steep uphill climb was a great workout

Amazing. Beautiful. Majestic. These words don’t even do it justice. The wild horses are something else, very chill and will come right up to you. Take your time on the hike down as it is very steep. And be ready for a calf killer coming back up. I said it is slightly harder then “moderate” but maybe that’s just me. Overall it was on of the best days I’ve had hiking down here. Highly recommend.

HikingGreat!No shade

From the lookout to the carved tree up the Muliwai/Z trail. The river was the widest I've seen it but passable. The horses are tame, yet roam free. https://www.strava.com/activities/4999195773 https://fatmap.com/adventureid/6618487/morning-hike https://craxylife.net/2021/03/23/waipio-valley-and-the-muliwai/

Beautiful hike down through the valley! We saw some (not so) wild horses on our way to the beach. Unfortunately, recent heavy rain made it treacherous to cross the river and get close to the waterfall. However, the hike was still worthwhile and amazed us! Most of the trail is paved and it’s not too challenging

HikingGreat!

Calf killer! Beautiful hike, take your time on the downhill and expect a longer return, the grade is very steep. Beautiful, good cover for most of the hike, wild horses (pretty tame though...came right up to the party behind us). Shared the road with many four-wheel drive vehicles and a handful of people. The younger people in our party (30-38) and very active found the uphill a bit harder than moderate and the older members (more sedentary 55-65 years young) took about 25 minutes longer. Overall, most skill levels can handle this....just might take a little longer for some! Have fun!!!

Ass kicker of a hike. I logged 22 miles and it definitely felt like it. Don’t do this hike unless you start super early and go at a good pace.

This hike is fine. Beautiful views from the top and bottom, not a lot in between. You're hiking along a road that others are driving Jeeps and trucks up and down the entire time, and it's steep enough that most trails probably would have done switchbacks rather than go at that grade the entire time. If you have a week on the island then this is probably worth visiting, but in my mind it didn't compare to Pololu Valley/Awini Trail. That has similar views from the top and bottom but on a much nicer trail where you aren't hiking on the road, and you have more consistent views all the way up and down.

Quick, dirty, tough and worth it!! The way down is hard on your knees. The way up is a major cardio workout. The flat part to the beach is good but several large and deep mud pits that you have to maneuver around. And the beautiful beach and river are your rewards!! It’s paved all the way down and well packed dirt on the flat path. Shade most of the way. We went on 2/17 heading down around noon, came back up around 2:30. Tide was coming in by 2:30. Chacos were fine. Boyfriend went back up barefoot once we were on asphalt. Bring water, a snack, and a towel and enjoy! Bathrooms at lookout are clean with tons of toilet paper. There’s also a low spigot at the bathhouse to rinse off mud and sand.

Very steep on a road with 4x4s trying to maneuver down some areas one lane. At the bottom you go left to see the waterfall from a distance. Then back to the right to get to the beach.

Geesh this was steep! The way back up the road wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be though. The beach seemed to have plenty of locals who enjoyed the strong waves, black sand, and picturesque walk along the beachfront.

It’s the paved four wheel drive road to the beach, it’s not a great trail, and the waterfall trail is a myth.
