Dry, hot, rocky, but breezy. Great views of the crashing waves. Lots of goats who stood a respectable distance from my leashed dogs. Only saw 2 other people. Peaceful.

HikingClosedGreat!

We just walked through the main cultural area. No one was at the fee booth and the exhibit buildings were closed. The walk through the cultural area was really interesting. Someone was carving wood in the traditional way. Goats in the parking lot. This was a walk not a hike. Very peaceful. Go to 2 step beach on your way out. It’s just outside the entrance.

Cool trek through some lava fields with tons of goats along the way. There’s a nice look out point at one end with some great cliffs and lava caves that are barred off. The way back goes along the beach and there are plenty of tide pools in the rocks to explore. $20 car entrance fee or park outside and walk in with a $10 fee.

This is a walk not a hike. It is through a historical site in the national park. It is absolutely beautiful, well worth the $20/vehicle entry fee. Well kept washrooms and lots of park staff. Really cool historical buildings and carvings to see and a small roped off area where sea turtles rest on land. There is a trail near by that goes to Ho’okena beach. It is hard to find but park rangers are happy to help. Lots of goats around but also lots of sun so bring water and sun protection. On the other side of the park from the trail to Ho’okena is a great snorkelling area although be very careful. There is no sand, just lots of rock and coral. Getting in and out was quite treacherous especially with any amount of surf. Many people came out bleeding. There is a shallow area with a nice sandy entrance that is less treacherous but also a bit less exciting.

Easy, beautiful stroll with lovely views in a very special, sacred place where respect for indigenous Hawaiian traditions is tantamount. Was disappointed to see so many people using the bathrooms here as changing/showering facilities for the snorkeling next door at Two Step. Please keep in mind that this area is full of high cultural and historic significance.

If you are looking for a fairly easy trail with AWESOME views, this is it! The continuation onto the 1871 trail is amazing. Easy footing, however I would always recommend good walking shoes. The goats...so many goats! There is very little shade if you are going on a sunny day so be prepared.

Super easy casual trail. I didnt go to the end because my Achilles was a little angry this morning and the loose lava rock didn't help, but the trail is nice. Wouldn't recommend flip flops on the trail because of the loose lava rock, but it would be doable.
