It has been reported this trail has a temporary closure due to COVID-19. Please see the park's website for up to date information. NOTE: Due to volcanic activity last year, the northern Crater Rim portion of this loop is closed, making this an out-and-back hike. You can still start at the Kīlauea Iki parking lot and take the Crater Rim trail to the Kīlauea Iki Trail and then return the way you came. But the full loop is inaccessible as of May 2019. Great day hike down into and across a solid lava lake in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Klauea Iki Trail starts in the rain forest on the crater's rim. The trail descends 400 feet through the rain forest to the crater floor. Hikers will cross the still-steaming crater floor, past the gaping throat of the vent that built Pu'u Pua'i cinder cone, and return to your starting point via the crater's rim. Highlights: Rain forest, birds, insects, 1959 lava lake, steam vents, cinder and spatter cone. https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/hike_day_craterrim.htm

Awesome trail. Hiked this February 2020 while visiting/vacationing from Alaska and it was definitely not like any trail I've ever hiked! Special place. Steam vents are super neat but don't get too close.

Great trail it was amazing to see this huge crater.

Such a fun trail. Great combo of rain forest and lava. Quite a few stairs but well worth it.

One of the best short hikes we’ve done in Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, or Kauai! Can be done in 1-1.5 hours depending on how many pictures you take!

Best of the best!!!

Get to see so much - lava tube, crater rim and more. Has rained recently and a few spots were muddy but passible.

I would recommend this trail to anyone looking for a great experience without difficulties. I did this trail in the light rain with no issues. IG: hikin_hawaii

Really cool hike and a must do hike if you’re going to Volcanoes National Park. It was blue skies and sunny when we began at the lookout. As we descended through the lush forest down to the canyon and it started raining on us halfway across. But it just made the whole environment feel extra surreal, like walking ok the moon. By the time we reached the far end of the crater the rain had stopped long enough for us to take a coffee break and enjoy the views before it began raining again as we ascended back up to the rim. The trails are all wide and well groomed. A couple muddy spots but easy to get around. Overall pretty easy trail, with the cool experience of walking across a former lava lake. *Note, we did the trail backwards (clockwise), and would recommend it. This way you will finish with the more dramatic part of the crater and the final stretch of the rim trail will be a flat and easy cool down back to the parking lot. Enjoy!

Great hike. The descent to the caldera and hiking inside was a awesome experience. Statistics 3.50 RT and approximately 866’ elevation gains.

Great loop trail over a lava lake. Easy to moderate hike with great scenery. Went later in the day, not very crowded on the trail. A very unique hike.

Did this trail today, was wonderful. You have the feeling of being an ant walking over the lid of a pressure cooker! I did this counter-clockwise as recommended by many fellow hikers here. I don't think it really makes much difference. If you prefer to climb up stairs and walk down a switchback, then clockwise is the go. Else, counter-clockwise is the your friend. The walk is well marked, and the numbered posts correspond to the detail in this booklet: https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/upload/Kilauea-Iki-Trail-Guide-2013.pdf which is a little out of date but still useful. I wanted to do the Byron Ledge extension, but it was closed. Next time! The hike took me 1.5 hours almost to the minute, including about 10min of photo stops. Garmin GPS recorded 5.7km. I would rate this walk as easy.

Excellent trail and must do when at the park. The whole loop is open as well as the little side trail to the lava tubes that just opened last week for the first time in a few years! (As of Feb 27/2020

Wonderful trail. We got there early, around 8am and had the trail mostly to ourselves. Parking lot was near full when we got back, so I imagine if you don't get there early you will have to contend with crowds. Swung by the Volcano House on the way back and grabbed some memorabilia. There's nothing like the energy of a National Parks visitor center. Worth the flight from Tennessee.

Absolutely do this in the opposite direction that the Rangers suggest. Coming up the stairs was sooooo easy and the switchbacks would be murder. Shade all the time that except on the crater floor. It was windy in the crater, but amazing!!!

National Parks never fail to deliver. The crater, and the hike into and out of it are otherworldly. Unforgettable.

Fun trail, lots of steps UP if you clock wise on the trail, if you go counter clock wise you’ll go down which I’m sure is easier. Fun hike

Wonderful trail. Nice easy hike. Just take enough water and do not forget the camera.
