Ala Mauka Makai, Ala Kahakai, Ala Nui Kaloko and Māmalahoa Trail Loop is a 4.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips.
The part of the trail by the coast is nice. The part that goes along the highway is lava rock.
Decent hike through lava trails to the road. The initial beach was clear, shortly after that the path was about a foot or so under water for about 15 feet. Easy shoes off ford. Later the path was completely washed out causing a path through the lava field. A danger in itself. The trail was just OK, not worth the return trip.
Lots of variation in terrain, from sandy beaches to lava trails. Parts of it you could do in flip flops, but the rougher sections would frustrate. Most heavily trafficked at the beach cove near the marina. Fewer people as you head north up the beach.
