The hike to the top of Mount Zas starts in Filotio, a small, traditional Greek village. From the town you will climb 625 meters to the summit of Mount Zas. The path consists mainly of a bumpy road full of rocks and boulders. Here and there salamanders shoot under the stones when they see our big feet passing by. Birds (especially a striking number of sparrows) whistle as if their lives depend on it. Bright yellow butterflies fly from one nectar plant to the other just before our eyes. Occasionally you will come across a goat and a sheep, usually tucked away shyly behind a tree. Naxos is not only the largest island of the Cyclades, it is probably also the most green. Mount Zas regularly stops some rain clouds and where there is water, there is also a lot of flora. You may see many bright yellow and purple flowers that attach themselves to the rock wall in every crack. The most striking plant you will see (and especially smell) is the dragon arum. This large dark purple flower spreads a scent of rotting eggs and dead meat as a lure for flies and beetles. The plant only flowers a few days a year. At the top of Mount Zas you of course have a fantastic view. Not only of Naxos, but also of the surrounding islands that appear to be dropped into the Mediterranean as miniature stones. At an altitude of 1,004 meters enjoy the view and recover from the intense climb to the top. There can be many flies and beetles on this hike.

Excursion easy and thankful 1 hour from the church

Really enjoyed the hike with my two kids (17 & 19). Super windy on our day up there. The wind was a bit unsettling on the rocky terrain near the top. Lighter hikers got thrown off balance a bit... but again, our day was exceptionally windy. Definitely recommend starting at Agia Marina. If you take the 9:30 bus to Agia Marina from Naxos you can be back at the bus stop to pick you up by 2pm. Walk up the road to the small church (Agia Marina) from where the bus drops you off. From there it is kind of obvious where to start - the path to the right of the church. Trail is marked clearly, but there are a few screw patches where it was nice to use the app to confirm we were still on the trail. As other people have mentioned on sites like TripAdvisor, you have to go through some gates. We only had to go through one. Enjoy!

Great hike, we found it to be moderate and took us about 3 1/2 hours coming up from Filoti. If we had known we could start from Agia Marina like most people, we probably would have chose that. The extra effort was worth it though for the views. I would recommend bringing lots of water. Even on an overcast day in May at 2 pm we were quite sweaty. There are a lot of bugs near the summit so bring spray.

Amazing but somewhat challenging hike. Make sure to start early as it gets hot and also read reviews for this hike on TripAdvisor to get more useful info. The path is well marked, but look for signs “2” and stone pyramids - we knew about these in advance which saved us some wrong turns. The views from the top is out of this world.
