Already 20 years ago, Crete was considered an insider tip for travel eagles. Nothing has changed to this day. The cycling trip boom has not yet reached Greece's largest island - much to the delight of individual cyclists, who prefer to explore the island in spring and autumn. While the west reaches quite mountainous to heights far beyond the 2000 meter mark, the east is noticeably gentler. But those who travel from the sea, for example from the popular north coast around Agios Nikolaos, to the interior of the island, also have to step into the pedals. For example, up into the Lassithi region, a plateau bordered almost by steep rocks, where thousands of windmills used to pump the water for agriculture from the limestone to the fields.
