Explore the Series of Beautiful, Lonely Beaches of Sithonia Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Chalkidiki, is one of the most visited places in Chalkidiki. Few visitors to this area can conceive that in this wilderness exists a chain of beautiful, unspoilt and practically empty beaches reserved just for admiration and wonderment. Why are they unpeopled? The moderate round trip from Neos Marmaras along the coastline southwards is about 20 km, gaining about 200 m in elevation. Tired of lounging the whole day on the same beach in Toroni or Sarti or somewhere else in Chalkidiki and looking for a diversion and exploring something special? So, this is a hike just for you. The whole trail follows the shoreline closely. Basically, the hike can be divided into sections as the following: from the Neos Marmaras to Porto Carras, from Porto Carras to the Gate, from the Gate along the coastline as far as time allows. It generally takes 10-11 hours for average hikers to complete the round trip, allowing a reasonable time for having a rest at empty or minimally populated, attractive beaches of your choice and swimming at the Porto Carras beach. Alternatives. Should you decide to shorten the trail by taking the car and still not to miss the highlights of the hike, you have the following options: 1. Drive up and park at Porto Carras bay and make it your trailhead (the round trip is about 14 km). 2. The same as in 1. In addition, you may shorten the hike along the coastline as you like (the round trip might be 7 km or so, or somewhere between 7 and 14 km). From Toroni or Sarti, you may get to and from Neos Marmaras easily also by bus as there is a perfect bus connection. An early bus there and a late bus back. While being behind the Gate in the area with restricted access, check your time meticulously because the notice board attached to the unattended Gate claims that it is open from sunrise to sunset only. According to the official notice-board attached to the Gate, the coastline behind the Gate stretching for many miles is for an unknown reason dedicated only to Porto Carras resort guests. If you want to see the forbidden beaches you have to consider yourself such a person. Otherwise, morally, you are not allowed to enter the Gate. But generally, it should be no problem at all as there is hardly a way how to distinguish you from the thousands of others on nearby beaches.
