Rheinsteig Stage 1: Bonn to Königswinter is a 13.5 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and backpacking and is accessible year-round.
The official starting point for the Rheinsteig is at the Bonn Town Hall. You can also park for free in Bonn on the Weberstrasse directly in the Rhine area. The Rheinsteig runs through the city near the shore. The signage is hard to miss, you can not get lost here. After crossing the Rhine over the Kennedy Bridge, the long-distance hiking trail initially runs along the shore until it turns left into the surrounding forests. Passing lakes, it goes over wide paths with the view over the city. It is a bit uphill to climb Petersberg, but the elevation gain is not too challenging. At the Rheinterassen restaurant you can sit on the large terrace and relax. The Steigenberger is slightly less hospitable for hikers. From here, the trail is usually downhill to the milk cottage and down into the valley to Königswinter and the stage's end destination.
