Description
Waypoints (0)

For us the trail was definitely difficult. Large parts of the trail are based on small rocks. Especially the middle section (we did it clockwise) took us a long time due to all the scrambling, averaging about 2 km/hour (sometimes even slower). Also its probably more like 20km. We didn’t completely finish the trail and took a shortcut but was still 17km. However, there are a lot of beautiful views. If you have fear of heights this is also a challenging trail, for me various parts were not so nice with my fear of heights

Incredible trail. Hard climb to the peak from whatever side you take but the views are worth it.

Amazing hike! The trail upwards (via St. Martin) is full of spectacular views and while challenging and exhausting, always stays fun. The path then from the summit (spectacular views again) to Stepbergalm is surprisingly cool, too. Only the way from there back to the car (via Königsweg) was awful (not terribly interesting, and there is so much gravel on the trail that it's extremely slippery). It took me 3:10h up and 2h down (excluding a big break at the summit and a late breakfast at Stepbergalm).

I had luck with weather. The trail is really hard and takes a good 9 hours, so carry enough food and water. I did the trail clockwise, visited stepbergalm first, and then ascending to the Krammerspitz. Anyway, my recording says it was more the 20km, I don’t think it’s 16km as described here. The views are definitely amazing.

This is a great hike! I’ve done it many times and the views never to bore. If you do this counterclockwise I’d make one change to the route. After the summit, continue down the main trail on Kramersteig to the west. You will hit a valley with a farm, cows and a great little beer garden called Stepberg. http://www.stepberg-alm.de The decent is a bit easier and longer but you can stop and eat, rehydrate (with beer?) and enjoy the views. If you go clockwise, you have the same option to stop at Berggaststätte St. Martin am Grasberg which is maybe 30-45 min from finishing. Great views here also of GP! http://martinshuette-grasberg.de

Amazing views and beautiful hike! However, the map shown here seemed to be a little outdated- we ended up going 13 miles instead of the 9 listed here! It made for a long hard day, but the views are worth it! Be prepared for a long day and consider getting more updated info before you go.

A very beautiful trail but harder then I expected! Make sure you bring plenty of water and don't choose a day that's too hot. The hike takes a good 9h so plan accordingly. Also, Garmish-Partenkirchen is a beautiful city. Worth a stay!

This was a wonderful and challenging day hike. It took my husband and I 9 hours to complete with a few breaks and a stop at the summit for lunch. We were so lucky to have perfect weather for our hike. The scariest part was crossing the snow on the slope on the backside of the mountain, but the views at the top were worth it. I recommend taking the loop counterclockwise as we did. The way down was a tad longer, yet easier than the ascent. We hiked this at the end of May on the Tuesday before Ascension Thursday and we only saw six other people on the trail. This has been one of my favorite hikes yet.

Beautiful and well-marked trail with amazing views of Zugspitze and the Alps. It's a steep climb, but not too difficult. The trail is popular with locals and quite busy, but definitely not overrun like the trails on the opposite side of the valley. Along the way are a bunch of alpine cabins & farms offering Bavarian food. Another plus is that this trail is easily accessible by public transport, e.g. from Munich. Just take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (approx. 1h) and walk from the train station to the trail head.
