Between Schonach, Schönwald and Furtwangen, the Black Forest shows a completely new side. The mountains only show green waves, which have hardly any significant differences in altitude. After the past days with a lot of ups and downs, the pleasurable knee-chilling promises, before it goes into the high black forest. Even after Wilhelmshöhe the Westweg remains faithful to its main direction south and runs without frills past the Wolf farm to the edge of the nature reserve Blindensee. In the early autumn morning, when the dewdrops of the night are still hanging in the grass and branches in the first sunlight, it is especially beautiful here. Around the idyllic high moor with cotton grass, crippled pines and many rare plants are numerous local legends. At the Weißenbacher Höhe the path leaves the ridge and changes through the hardly noticeable valley of the Elztal over to the main ridge. The small Elz spring is passed before a source of much greater importance is reached at the Martinskapelle. The Breg, which joins Donaueschingen with the Brigach to the Danube, rises from here quite inconspicuously. The short detour is a must on every Westwegwanderers! Back on the way the Günterfelsen is the next destination directly on the way. One has to pay a little attention to where the Westweg disappears on a path in the forest, because it is a welcome change from the gravel path around the rocks, although no view is expected. The offers itself from the already nearby lookout tower on Brend (1,149 m). Especially the view to the south towards the massive Kandel and the broad Feldberg massif stirs the anticipation for the upcoming stages. If the view is clear, even the almost entire Western Alps crest presents itself from the Zugspitze to the Mont Blanc. That the Brend under Black Forest hikers is misunderstood something is probably on the road leading to the summit, along which now also the gentle descent to the Newck takes place. Here you meet the B 500, which, like the Westweg, crosses the Black Forest from north to south. In their vicinity, sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right, in the final sprint to the cold hostel.
