Blackstone Edge Circular is a 7.4 mile loop trail located near Littleborough, Greater Manchester, England that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and running.
This walk is not solely about the ridge. It starts and finishes in softer country dotted with old farms and weavers cottages. Blackstone Edge is 1,323ft high, about half a mile long and runs along the Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire county boundary. The rocks have some appeal for rock climbers. Hollingworth Lake was constructed in 1800 to provide water for the Rochdale Canal. It is currently a mecca for many types of water sports. There are pubs, hotels and a chip shop in the area. The Roman road over Blackstone Edge Moor was well used by packhorse trains carrying wool and barrels of salt in 15 c. until the coming of the canals and turnpike roads. The stone remains are not thought to be Roman as they are less than 200yrs old. The Aiggin Stone on the Lancs/Yorks boarder is a Mediaeval guide stone some 600yrs old. The name Aiggin is said to have derived from the French Aiguillie, a needle.
Very good walk. Difficult at the start to find the right track but eventually found it and the rest was great. A little muddy in parts due to the snow melting. Great views
Good Friday morning hike, the start is hard to keep track as you cross a farm and possibly private land. Thoroughly enjoyed it however
Parts of this route go over private land and across fields with no paths. Take care. Overall worth it though for views
Good walk but couldn’t have followed it without the gps on my phone, we particularly enjoyed the Roman road. Some paths hard to find ... but it was very enjoyable ... without stops and looking at the map it would have been approximately three and a half hours ..
Overall, a good walk, although as someone else said it was *very* windy. Visitor Centre car park is £1 for two hours, or £2 for four. I did this walk in 2 hours 20 minutes. I found the path a little difficult to follow and went a bit astray a couple of times. Could be my GPS, or the fact the wind was threatening to turn my eyelids inside out! Views at the top were great; it was a grey day when I did it, so I imagine these are even more spectacular when it's clear. Will definitely do this trail again.
Great walk. Challenging in parts due to snow. Amazing views of surrounding areas
A bit difficult to follow the path. Probably because of the weather.
very adventurous track, i think the map in the AllTrail app is old and it keep telling us to go into private land, we also felt lost for a bit but a resident guided and we managed to walk over 8km. very very beautiful.
A good moderate walk. Nice and quiet as this is one of the less walked routes around here. Good climb doing this route anti-clockwise. Steep(ish) descent near Blackstone Edge old road
