Getting There

A circular walk which starts between Walderton and Upmarden in West Sussex. The walk is partly wooded and partly through open countryside with expansive views down to Chichester harbour. As the walk name suggests, there are three seats on the walk, the first two with lovely views down to the coast and the third frequently gives views of deer in a glade in front of you. If you want a shorter downland 'fix' then walk to the first or second seats which come shortly after the start, have a coffee or tea and take in the views and retrace your steps. There is one steepish descent which can be slippery at times and one moderate climb, also a gradual descent which is rutted in places and is strewn with flints. There is one stile on the walk and one kissing gate. There are no cattle or sheep. There is one stretch along a quiet road. Parking is somewhat limited being restricted to one car. Allow 2 hours.

Up Marden is on the South Downs, 7 miles (11 km) north-west of Chichester, close to East Marden and Walderton. The walk starts on the road between Walderton and Up Marden. There is no public transport to start of the walk. By car, starting in Walderton, head in the direction of Stoughton and take the left turning shortly after leaving Walderton then continue for 0.8 of a mile. Look out for a two-way footpath sign on the right, a footpath leading from the left and the right side of the road and a wide track leading off to left to some barns. There is room to park on the left, pointing towards the barns but still leaving access clear to them. Latitude and longitude of parking is 50.901252/-0.872040.

Great walk with plenty of variety and some lovely views, even in the rain.

Gr8 walk. V varied, quite long and one hideous long steep hill. Quite a bit of tree felling going on so some bits a bit tricky to clamber over. Kids exhausted at the end but we walk very fast.

First to Review

great walk, a bit tiring as it goes up and down some hills, but beautiful views, very remote, stunning countryside. can spot lots of wildlife- deer, hares, pheasants, etc.
