Getting There

A circular pub walk from the Bolney Stage in Bolney, West Sussex. The Bolney Stage dates from about 1500 and oozes character with inglenook fireplaces, ancient flagstones and crooked beams. The walking route explores the beautiful surrounding hills and valleys, with amazing views and plenty of wildlife. There's something for everyone on this varied route, from woodlands to parkland, sheep pastures to smallholdings and even a vineyard. The route has several climbs and descents throughout. The paths are unmade for the most part and can get quite muddy in winter and after periods of rain so good waterproof boots are recommended. There are a couple of sections of road walking along quiet lanes so take care of any traffic on these parts. You will need to negotiate several gates plus seven stiles (all of which have either adjacent dog gates or open fencing alongside). Whilst the vast majority of the paths are fenced, you will cross a couple of pastures which are likely to be holding sheep so take care with dogs. The first (and last) sections of path can be a little overgrown but persevere, it is only a few hundred yards. Approximate time 2 to 3 hours.

Bolney is located about 11 miles north of Brighton, just to the west of the A23. The walk starts and finishes at the Bolney Stage which is on London Road (just north of the village centre) and has its own car park. Approximate post code RH17 5RL.

Lovely walk with a variety of landscapes (farm, beautiful houses, forest, meadows, ponds...). Impossible to get bored!

A lovely walk and yes the start and finish are a little tricky as the path is narrow but 200% it is worth persevering the 200yds or so. One section was confusing as Cross Colwood Lane is the name of the Lane and not Colwood Lane to be crossed. Some lovely views and great woodland walks as well. In 2hrs 10 mins I came across 12 people.... perfect

Beautiful walk with loads of variety - quiet villages, woods, farmland, lakes and valleys. Definitely one of the best walks we’ve done from the Sussex selection.

Very muddy but a nice circular walk. Would not recommend food at Bolney Stage though.

Quite a diverse route with a few hills, roads, footpaths etc. Visited in January but very muddy in some places. I saw a variety of animals on route including sheep, chickens, pheasant, horse, fox, rabbits. Managed to stroke the sheep and horses which was nice. Overall a nice walk.

A great circular route, however, completed in January after a fairly dry winter and still encountered huge volumes of mud - some parts of the route will be very difficult to navigate in wet conditions.

Beautiful walk, easy to park in the pub car park, a bit muddy but we had just had three weeks of rain so to be expected, good variety of animals, beautiful houses and scenery on the route. Easy to follow and loops perfectly back to the stunning Pub.

Walking

great walk - lovely varied terrain and beautiful pond with bench for a nice halfway stop. Avoid eating at Bolney Stage pub. Very poor quality food and expensive. Sunday roast was almost inedible. Walk takes you past Bolney Vineyard which has a very attractive restaurant with outside terrace and appetising menu.

Lovely varied walk, nothing challenging. An abundance of wildlife as well was an added bonus.

A lovely first iFootpath walk with the dog, directions were fantastic, very impressed and can’t wait for the next one. Lunch in The Bolney Stage after, lovely bar staff who welcomed the dog and our muddy boots.

A really pleasant walk. It took us 2hrs 20 mins at a casual pace in glorious weather. Great views and beautiful houses on the route. Back to the pub for a great pint and excellent food. Thank you. Thoroughly recommended.

Very nice walk and very nice pub. Took us just under 2 hours timed perfectly to avoid the forecast rain. Would do again in the dry as it was very muddy in parts.

Really lovely walk with everything you could want; lovely views, animals, woodland, fields, etc. App worked really well, just needs some slight updating (although mostly down to the time of year). We got a little confused at the end of step 3 as you have to step over a small fence when walking round the sheep pens, luckily the farmer pointed out the way. Otherwise really great instructions and well worth a walk!

Fantastic walk, takes in a wonderful array of varying scenery. Rolling hills, wonderful farm life with lots of livestock, cute village life and a spectacular 15th century grand Tudor pub that just oozes character, with inglenook open fireplaces, ancient flagstones and crooked beams. A very warm welcome from the bar staff, good honest food and a chatty atmosphere if you like that kind of thing. Couldn't fault the walk and pub :)
