Getting There

A circular walk in West Sussex through woodland and open downland with expansive views. Passing a pub deep in the woods with a fascinating history, a lost medieval village, a secret villa hidden from prying eyes, the Devil's Jumps and a poignant memorial to a young German pilot. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout. You will need to negotiate one stile and several gates. Allow 4 hours. Note: Pub is open only 11.30-14.30 during the day.

The walk starts near North Marden, off the B2141 Lavant to Petersfield Road some 5.3 miles from Lavant. From Lavant, travel north on the A286 Midhurst Road. After leaving Lavant (going north towards Midhurst), turn left after 350 metres onto the B2141 Petersfield Road. After 4.5 miles, on a left-hand bend, look out for a lane on the right with a cul-de-sac sign. The latitude and longitude for this point is 50.936870,-0.843887. There is parking on the grass at the top of the lane. Approximate post code PO18 9JY.

Really lovely walk but the first set of instructions send you "backwards" towards point 4. Great views and a lovely circular walk. Took us 4 hrs exactly at a decent pace with a few stops along the way. Great for the dog as virtually entirely possible off the lead.

An interesting walk but the wooded area feels like it could get very muddy with rain. Lots of trees being chopped which made me feel a little sad. Once out and by the top right hand corner of the route there is some of the most beautiful views I’ve seen in Sussex. The Royal Oak is also at the Start/End of the walk

didn't find a place to park at the start of the walk apart from the pub which is currently closed due to coronavirus. I have marked an alternative spot for parking. we walked clockwise around the route. good variety of scenery. personally I find some of the surfaces along the South downs way quite uneven and tiring. a relief to get off the South downs way and head for home. because our car was parked a little further back from the pub we took an alternative route (see my recording) which turned out to be one of the nicest parts of the walk

Great walk. Took us 4 hours with a stop for lunch and not going at a fast pace. First half is really nice and sheltered and the second half more exposed. Beautiful forest trails in parts. Will revisit in the spring.

Lovely walk good views and different terrain. The pub is open only 11.30-14.30 during the day. Dog friendly although there is no water so will need to take some with you for yourself and any four legged friends.

Very nice walk with good views. Some climbs and descents but not too hard. The paths were dry and the hardest part was the south downs way but only because there was no shade from the sun.

Hard going in parts, wind and terrain but so worth it! Can’t wait to go back and do it in summer.
