Getting There

A round walk from East Dean in West Sussex, up through Charlton Forest taking in parts of the West Sussex Literary Trail and the South Downs Way. The walk has some lovely views and passes a number of Bronze Age barrows. The first half of the walk is generally uphill and the second half downhill. There are a number of stiles and gates on the route. No cattle were encountered, but there was one field with sheep in. Allow 3 hours.

East Dean is reached by taking a turning off the A286 Chichester to Midhurst road at Singleton. Drive for one and a half miles passing through Charlton. East Dean is a charming little village nestled in the South Downs. There is a village green in the middle and a duck pond. There is general parking around the green. The lat/lng of the centre of the village is 50.908966,-0.715702 and the postcode is PO18 0JB.

It’s a long, but very peaceful, quiet trail that goes through really nice woodland. You might come across sheep. It’s also easy to park at the village hall.

Just completed this walk in about 2 hours. Not very well sign posted but okay if you follow the app. It’s mostly forests with not really any views so keep that in mind if you prefer to take the scenic route. Probably won’t be rushing back, however the dog loved it and we LOL’ed the whole way. Lovely sighting of a pheasant at the end and a few sheep kept the walk exciting. Wish the pub was open. Now time to rest up before we venture out again next week. On to the next

A really enjoyable walk Nice village to start from with a good pub (closed at moment of course) and a duck pond. Good instructions although a few things have changed. The 1st 2 styles are now gates and towards the end with the mention of a box just before entering the wide field (step 4) to have lunch on. The box is still there but only just. ______ It would appear that the farmer who owns the field just before Newhouse Lane is making it difficult to use his land as the gates that enter his field didn't open and there was no way out as again the gates were tied/locked. You have to climb the gate to enter the field which was no problem and then you need to straddle the gate to exit the field. A really good walk with no cattle

Tried this walk today 23/10/19 and the route through the wood was totally sheep fenced and barbed wired off. No way mark or anything.
