Getting There

The route has a few climbs and descents including a long climb over the South Downs ridge. Almost all the paths can be muddy and in the wetter months the South Downs are often thick with chalky clay, so good boots are a must. You will need to negotiate several sets of steps, kissing gates and 12 stiles (all of which have open fence surrounds suitable for dogs to pass through). There are a couple of stretches along quiet roads and you will also need to cross the railway at an unsignaled crossing, so take particular care at these points. You will be sharing several of the meadows and fields with both cattle and sheep. Allow 6 hours for the walk plus extra time for the pit stops, so ideally you should allow the whole day.

The walk starts and finishes at Arundel Rail Station in West Sussex. You can catch the train direct from London Victoria. If you are coming by car, there is a pay and display car park at Arundel Station which costs £4.40 per day Monday-Saturday or £2 on Sunday. Approximate post code BN18 9PH.

Excellent walk with fantastic views and beautiful scenery throughout. Also some good pub stops en route although it may be worth booking ahead with the current restrictions.

HikingGreat!

Great hike, not too strenuous on the hills, surprisingly. We also added a short walk up to Amberley for a quick stop in the pub!

Loved it. Some very overgrown paths but this made it all the more fun! Wish we had extended it upwards to Amberley but still full of delightful views.

We loved this walk. Lots of different terrains. Lots of cows, however none angry as per previous review. No beers were found on the way despite our searching. However, we are in a global pandemic so I suppose it is to be expected. Bring food with you, there isn’t many places to buy it. It only look us 5 hours so keep that in mind if you are good walkers! Our favourite bit of the walk was all the wonderful bridges we found on the way. One of them was even award winning. Enjoy!

Ok so there’s not many ways to describe the rout, Apart from Beautiful, Just beautiful....you start in the beautiful twin of Arundel close to the amazing castle, we went clockwise and made the very easy rout longer as it was so nice, We did 26km in 6h 15 mins. It’s spring and the sun was out, No mud at all, You could find food and drink at the start and the end. Most of the rout is in the open hills and fields, You will find your self going along the river, Through small villages, Over rail tracks, over a bridge or two, We just loved it, As we made it longer as we didn’t want it to end it took us through a little lovely woodland, All paths were very clear to follow, We will be going back to this area tomorrow.

Very muddy and boggy. Great walk and we did it in 5 hours. But the mud was hard going in places!

Very good trail with beautiful views. Some steep hills and recent heavy rainfall made it more challenging- some parts were waterlogged and very marshy. Hardly saw anyone else. Highlights were walking through fields of cows and sheep
