Getting There

This is a linear trail from Horseley Fields Junction Bridge in Wolverhampton, to Sneyd Junction in Bloxwich. It follows the course of the Wyrley and Essington Canal. Allow 2-2.5 hours to complete. The route itself is along a canal towpath. There are no steps or stiles, but there are a couple of bridges to navigate. There are also several radar key scheme gates. The route starts in Wolverhampton which has all the usual amenities and ends near to Bloxwich, a busy town. There are also several shops near to the first waypoint. This route is something of a "route of two halves". It starts in a highly developed area of Wolverhampton but ends between several nature reserves. There are several canal junctions along the route and points of historical interest. There is also lots of wildlife to see, particularly at the end of the walk. Kingsfishers have been spotted between waypoints 1 and 2.

As a linear walk you have two choices for getting there: either to leave a car at each end, or to use local buses/trains. By car to start point: The nearest parking is a pay and display car park at Oxford Street, Wolverhampton. Approximate postcode: WV1 3SD. From the car park, head onto Middle Cross, turn right along Horseley Fields, walk 400m along then turn left immediately after the bridge over the canal. By bus to start point: Wolverhampton is quite close by, however the nearest bus stop is on Horseley Fields. The 529 bus departs here regularly, visiting Wolverhampton - Neachells - Willenhall - Bentley - Walsall. See nxbus.co.uk for timetable. Stop ID nwmjdwmp or nwmjdwmj. By train to start point: The nearest train station is Wolverhampton. Depart the train station, walk past the multistorey car park on your left, then keep left before the bridge. Follow the footpath onto Horseley Fields, then walk down to Lower Horseley Fields. Turn left immediately after the bridge. By car from end point: there is roadside parking available adjacent to Sneyd Reservoir, on Vernon Way. Approximate postcode: WS3 2LU From the canal bridge, head directly north and cross the A4124 onto Vernon way. By bus from end point: The 89 stops nearby, visiting Walsall - High Heath - Bloxwich - Wednesfield - Wolverhampton via Pelsall, New Invention and New Cross Hospital. From the canal bridge, head directly north and turn right along the A4124. See nxbus.co.uk for timetable. Stop ID: nwmgwpga or nwmgwpdw. By train from end point: The nearest train station is Bloxwich. Head north onto the A4124, turn right and walk along, taking the third right onto Sneyd Hall Road, then the first left on Mulberry Road. Follow Mulberry Road, bearing left onto Croxdene Avenue. The access to the platform will be on your left.
