Getting There

A circular pub walk from The Bulls Head in Earlswood, near Solihull and on the border between the West Midlands and Warwickshire. The Bulls Head is a historic country pub offering locally sourced food and award-winning cask ales from Daniel Thwaites. The walking route explores the fascinating local waterways, including a stretch of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal and a circuit of Earlswood Lakes, with lots of history and wildlife to discover. The walk is relatively flat with only a couple of gentle slopes. It follows a mixture of canal towpaths, lakeside paths and country lanes. Whilst most of the paths are normally firm, some stretches can have some mud and puddles after periods of rain and the path around Windmill Pool is prone to becoming very muddy in winter and after rain (so you will need good boots at these times). About half of the road stretches have pedestrian pavements but do take care of traffic on those stretches without. There are no stiles on route, but you will need to negotiate several kissing gates and a staggered barrier. You will not be sharing the paths with any livestock, but there are lots of birds and wildfowl on the lakes, so take care with dogs. Allow 2 hours.

The Bulls Head is located on Limekiln Lane, in the northern half of Earlswood village (which is within the West Midlands and about 4 miles south-west of Solihull). The pub has its own large car park. Approximate post code B94 6BU. If you are coming by public transport, you can adjust the walk to start on Malt House Lane (Waypoint 4), which is just a half-mile walk from The Lakes rail station.

Quite an easy walk but at the moment the lakes are being well walked and extremely muddy. Take some duck food (not bread!) and feed the wildlife. Would have been great to finish the walk with a pie and pint.

Walking

This is an excellent trail. There were lots of things to see and learn about along the route. We started and ended at Earlswood Lakes as the pub car parks are currently closed. I particularly liked the canal towpath. The route inclusive of the lakes is very muddy. Walking boots or wellies are definitely needed.

Nice walk around the lakes, easy to follow, great chance to see lots of birds including herons and cormorants. Most of the path is muddy, wear walking boots or wellies.

Nice local walk. The 3rd lake is very muddy but you could miss it out. There's a nice little woodland walk you could take at the far end of the 2nd lake, take the bridge on your right as you reach the edge of the woodland and take a circular route through woods. The Bulls Head car park is closed but you can park on Valley Road opposite the lakes.

WalkingMuddy

It's okay, flat walk, bit of canal, bit of road, circular around man made lake. Be mindful that wellington's are needed, in certain places after heavy rain the paths were like a sluice, walking shoes not suitable as ankle deep at times. Good local walk, not a travel too.

The lakes are gorgeous especially in Autumn, but if you have small kids be aware quite a lot of road walking some without pavements

The initial part to the lakes had too much road walking (no path) but after that it was good. Be prepared for mud but beautiful views. Our puppy loved it but had to be kept on lead. The pub is lovely & happy for us to park there.. went in for a late lunch after and the food was reasonably priced

Nice walk. Too much on the road which with a dog is a pain but is a pleasant walk. Walking from the Red Lion around the lakes would miss out the roads.

HikingGreat!

Nice walk, if you’re going in wet weather or in autumn/winter then recommend decent footwear as was quite muddy around the ford even in mid august with little rain! Pub is open but if you’re parking there you must be a patron so make sure you have a pint!
