Getting There

A circular pub walk from The Crabmill in Preston Bagot, Warwickshire. The Crabmill makes the perfect spot for refreshments before or after your walk. The walking route joins a stretch of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal towpath with beautiful old narrow locks, canal boats and wildlife to enjoy. After crossing a small aqueduct, the route leads you through pastures and along tree-lined bridleways to reach a pretty old ford. The final stretch takes in the imposing hilltop Preston Bagot Church. The route includes several steady gradients but there are no steep sections. Whilst many of the paths are firm, some bridleways can be churned, a couple of fields can be boggy and the ford-side path can flood after periods of heavy rain. With this in mind, good boots are a must (or wellies in the winter months). You will need to negotiate several gates and kissing gates plus one stile (this has a gap for small dogs but larger dogs will need to climb over or be lifted). You are likely to encounter sheep in a few of the pastures. There are a few short stretches of road walking along country lanes, but the traffic is normally very light. Allow 1.5 hours.

The Crabmill is located on the A4189, about 1.5 miles west of Claverdon and 1.5 miles east of Henley-in-Arden. The pub has its own car park. Approximate post code B95 5EE.

Nice variety - canal, fields, wooded paths, and a great ford to splash through (there is a dry way round!)

A lovely walk through some fabulous countryside. A bit wet through the Ford but worth the “paddle”.

Enjoyable walk in early springtime sun. Pathway a bit muddy leading down to the ford.

A lovely Sunday afternoon walk. The sun even came out. Was very muddy from the canal to Henley road so waterproof shoes or wellies needed.

Lovely walk but very very muddy this time of year. If you don’t have wellies or waterproof boots, stay clear!

Great walk, the section after the canal was very boggy but wasn’t bad other than that. Dogs were off the lead for the vast majority which is a bonus.

Lovely walk in late November. Muddy in places so big boots required. Quiet, pretty and very relaxing. Would be perfect when Crabmill open.

Walking

Beautiful views but extremely muddy. Manageable in wellies but more of a summer walk. Second half has a fair bit of road walking but still pleasant and the roads aren't too busy

HikingGreat!

Leafy canal walk, great countryside, picture perfect church & rectory, tree covered bridle way, plus a tricky ford over stream. Moderate & infrequent assents. Easily completed in 2-3 hours but don’t be surprised to if you get your footwear wet. Worth a drink at the finish line

Beware after rain. It's August, there's been some showers recently which left parts very boggy for this time of year. One section completely flooded and not viable to walk through. Had to turn back.

Great walk, unfortunately the field next to Rookery Lane now has a large heard of cows in. As the cows and their calves were gathered by the gate, blocking our exit, we decided to turn back to the Towpath. We continued along the Towpath which provided us with some lovely shade, before heading back to the Crabmill for a great lunch.

Really clear instructions and an all round lovely walk! A mix of canal, country lanes, fields and gravel paths. No livestock in fields at the moment.

I did this today with my 5 and 7 year old, and we really enjoyed it! We wore wellies in case of mud, but it wasn't too bad. Beautiful walk, lovely canal, a few animals, and lots of friendly people along the way! We stopped for an ice cream in Henley in our way back as a reward
