Getting There

A circular walk around the historic village of Brinklow over fields, roads, and the Oxford Canal plus an optional detour to one of Britain's finest Motte and Bailey castles. The route is mostly level, with a couple of slight inclines on the road sections. There is a set of steps down to the canal, and a set of steps up to Brinklow Castle if you take the detour. The path between Brinklow Castle and Broad Street is narrow, quite steep, uneven and can be muddy. The fields are generally well drained and even after a good rainfall were not muddy, though the canal path can be very muddy in parts. There are a few sheep in the first couple of fields and you will need to negotiate approximately eight kissing gates. There are no facilities on the walk, other than what you can find in Brinklow village.

The walk starts and finishes at the free car park on Barr Lane in Brinklow. Brinklow lies on the B4455 (Fosse Way). From the M6 J2/M69 take the A46 south for 3 miles. Turn left onto the A428 for another 3 miles to Bretford. Turn left onto the B4455 towards Brinklow for a further 2 miles. Turn right onto Broad Lane, signposted B4027 Lutterworth. Barr Lane is on the left after around 400 yards, signposted to the car park. Approximate post code CV23 0LU. (Alternatively you could park in the free car park on Cathiron Lane, Waypoint 3, and adjust the walk to start and finish there).

Very pleasant pretty good walking conditions other than a little bit boggy on the canal path near Brinklow. really pleasant views and easy access to the castle. The bitter sunshine would be preferential but a very nice walk and a decent distance. child friendly but I would suggest problems will struggle

Really nice walk with the dog, some road sections but not much! Very quiet, some fields of sheep but we went in March so not to sure how many will be out in the summer months if you wanted to take the dog. Lovely walk!!

HikingGreat!

A very pleasant walk, quiet once you leave the car park. A bit muddy along sections of the tow path but nothing a stout pair of walking boots couldn’t deal with.

Parked at the bottom end, Canal car park then walked the route in reverse. Great walk for a Friday afternoon. As some commentators have mentioned the route is very muddy in places though nothing a stout pair of boots or wellies won't fix. the tow path has reopened but there is evidence of a repair to an embankment collapse. please be aware.

We walked this on a very frosty day in February .. this was a blessing in two ways. Firstly, the mud was frozen hard - in several places the path would have been welly-deep, including long stretches of the canal towpath. Secondly, the frosting of snow and frozen canal made for many beautiful views, with long icicles above running streams, the motionless navigation, and the bands of crisp white marking the remnants of former open fields. We finished the walk exploring Brinklow Castle, which we had not previously visited; a fascinating culmination to a beautiful morning.

Really nice straight forward walk. Nothing too strenuous but some great views and varied scenery. As mentioned the canal towpath is out of action and I wouldn’t advise circumnavigating the cordoned off areas as we did.

very pleasant walk, interesting sights along the way. Be AWARE, the canal tow path will be closed for the next 5 to 6 weeks, repairing land slip between Rose Narrow boats and the bridge over the Brinklow to Easenhall road.

Canal part is really nice. The rest is okay as you walk through nice fields. Sheep are great but no views to write home about.

Walking

excellent walk, nice mixture of fields canals and roads. Terrific view from the top of Brinklow castle. For some reason the gate at start of walk was padlocked so had to climb over, surely this should not be, all right for youngsters but late seventies plus dodgey knees a bit of an effort. None the less thoroughly enjoyed the walk.

I got a bit confused at the beginning, but I'm not great with directions! Don't be tempted to walk towards every gate you see at the start!

WalkingGreat!

Lovely walk with some nice views. A couple muddy patches along the canal path but otherwise it was nice and dry. We also noticed there are other walks around the local area that I'm going to look into as it's a really nice place to visit.

Seemed a really nice route but currently the footpath is closed after the intersection with the canal spur (mud slides apparently)
