Getting There

A circular pub walk from The Wheatsheaf on Esher Green in Esher, Surrey. The Wheatsheaf is a 200-year-old inn which has been lovingly restored into a smart community pub, the perfect place for refreshments before or after your walk. The walking route heads down Esher High Street before crossing the golf course into West End to reach Esher Commons. The paths through West End Common, Esher Common and Arbrook Common provide a beautifully peaceful journey with plenty of wildlife to enjoy. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout, but there are only a couple of steep sections. Several of the paths in the commons are surfaced with stone, but the unmade stretches can become muddy in the winter and after periods of rain. It is easy to get lost in the commons, so it is recommended using the live GPS map within Alltrails to help with navigation. You will need to negotiate several gates, a shallow set of steps plus one narrow sleeper bridge (just two planks wide). There are a couple of road crossings that need care, although visibility is good. There is no livestock on the route and dogs are welcome on the commons, in fact they are a popular dog walking area. Allow 2.5 hours.

Esher is located about 5 miles south-west of Kingston-upon-Thames and is easily accessed from the A3. The walk starts and finishes from The Wheatsheaf pub which is located on Esher Green and has its own car park. Approximate post code KT10 8AG. Alternatively, if you prefer, you could adjust the walk to start on the commons and visit the pub part way round by starting at the West End Common car park (waypoint 2 and approximate post code KT10 8LZ).

Great forest walk. Can be quite busy with dog walkers in the morning, but much quieter after 11am.

Some great part but would cut short the first bit all the way to pond. Very easy walk. Good descriptions of the way points.

Very nice trek, easy to do, with some amazing forest parts. Don’t expect to swim in river or the ponds

Beautiful trail through the forest. Easy. At the beginning the route goes along the busy road for about a mile. In some instances the satellite took us off the path, obviously the app had difficulties catching signal. Make sure you have full battery in your phone.

Have to give this one a 3 stars, few different reasons the start of the trail about a mile of roadway on the pavement, the car parking where you have to pay. I’d recommend starting the walk at Arbrook common car park as it’s free, rather than parking in town, you go straight in the woods from there which are stunning and 5 stars, beautiful part of the walk, there’s a part about 4 miles in where is overgrown with stinging nettles 9.7.2019 where would of been easier if the route just took you straight on in the first place, we back tracked back and took that path.

Far too much concrete, about 30% road walking which is a pity. We need to try to devise our own just on the commons and along the stream, which is lovely. Thanks for introducing us to this area. The Wheatsheaf is a gem! Jan

Lovely walk but a bit too much 'town' for me.

Very nice walk and would definitely recommend it to anyone! It starts and finishes in the Esher town passing beautiful area with big, expensive houses. However, most of the walk is out in a countryside, going through gorgeous woodlands, passing some lakes and parks.

Very nice walk on a sunny afternoon on a autumn Sunday. The scene was simply stunning. The food at the pub is also very nice. recommended to book in advance if on a weekend.
