Getting There

A circular (and decently strenuous) pub walk from The Parrot in Forest Green, Surrey. The Parrot sits proudly on the village green overlooking the cricket ground, the perfect position to fulfil its natural right as the heart of the local community. The walking route is a rewarding journey in the Surrey Hills, initially climbing north through woodland and rhododendron gardens to reach Leith Hill Tower, the highest point in South East England. The panoramic views from the hill are truly breath-taking. After descending from Leith Hill, the route leads you through rolling leafy Surrey countryside, passing through Jayes Park along the way, a beautiful estate complete with mansion house and impressive walled gardens. The walk begins with a long climb to reach Leith Hill (a total climb of about 200 metres) followed by a steep descent and then more gentle gradients for the rest of the route. It follows a mix of woodland paths and tracks plus a few grass field paths, with some stretches that can be muddy after periods of rain. There are a couple of short stretches along the edge of roads that need care. The vast majority of the route is free from livestock, but you will cross one pasture that may be holding cattle. You will need to negotiate a few gates, long flights of steps plus two stiles (both with very large dog gaps alongside). If you would prefer to avoid the stiles and pasture, you could simply use the outward leg to follow a there and back to the tower version of the route. Allow 3 hours.

The small village of Forest Green is located about 2 miles east of Ewhurst and 2 miles south of Holmbury St Mary, just to the south of the Surrey Hills AONB. The Parrot is situated at the northern end of the village, on Horsham Road and opposite the large green. The pub has its own large car park. Approximate post code RH5 5RZ.

A beautiful walk with great views. A steepish ascent to the tower but nothing too crazy. A great mix of woodland and views. Super clear directions too.

Great walk with steep uphill section to Leith Tower with fantastic views. Rest of the walk fairly flat but with some interesting properties to see. The Parrot looked like a great place to eat, but closed due to COVID when I visited.

Unbelievable views! Felt more like California than Surrey. Beware cow field towards end, very unclear directions... just turn right!

Great walk with varied nature and nice views. Can get crowded around the hill and unfortunately not everyone is willing to make an effort to social distance.

Excellent trail. Beautiful views after ascending Leith Hill. It is steep but not too difficult. Easy to follow route too.

This trail was really fun and highly recommend it! There was quite a large part where you had to go up hill but the views at the top of Leith hill and the tower just blew our mind! Coming back down the hill was down steps and they were quite steep so be careful with those. This is quite a challenging walk but really enjoyable! We didn’t want it to end. I’d definitely do this one again!

Highly recommend this trail for anyone loving a good uphill stomp, the reward is well worth it! Spectacular 360 views at Leith Hill make the slog very worth the while, especially on a clear day, we were blessed!! ordinarily you can climb the tower but sadly closed due to COVID however refreshments now available from the small bar. The trail moves onwards into downward woodland trails and shady areas and open fields and meadows. Definitely feel you’ve had a good workout at the end!!

Excellent walk with Leith Hill as a great stopping point for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. I decide to go on this trail mid January so some of the fields were very muddy, most of the other paths were fine. Lots of great sites, some very quiet sections and some busier sections around the national trust sections. Lots of ups and downs a long the way to keep challenging and pushing you on. Overall a really good walk.

Very muddy few hours walk but great scenery and views. Steep walk up to Leith Hill Tower then steep descent to fields which were very water logged this time of year so good boots needed. Few stretches along roads but mainly woodland trails and fields. The Parrot was fabulous at the end, welcoming us and our dog - nice atmosphere with roaring log fires. Would like to redo this walk again in the summer.

This is a great walk for woods, open fields, lovely old cottages and houses, and fabulous views from Leith Hill. The Parrot was a lovely warm snug reward at the end of a cold November day. Our spaniel loved it, despite the few bits on roads. Great directions, didn’t go wrong once, and they were informative. Highly recommend.

Good work out, first 2 miles is all incline up to leith hill and then a decline back down, through a field and forest. Really nice views up top of the hill, weather was damp so in parts have to be careful very slippery on some of the walking surface and going down the hill. Would recommend

Delightful walk on a glorious sunny Sunday with tea and sausage roll at Leith Hill Tower, then a pint/G&T at The Parrot at the end. Tilly the dog had a great time, seldom having to be on the lead.

Great walk. A couple of stretches on the road so need to be careful on a couple of the bends. Wonderful views from the top of Leith Hill. Warning re pub. The only shady area in the garden they will not serve food in.

Wow fantastic walk, the first part up the hill was mostly shady so was great seeing as it was a hot day, was a bit out of breath in places on the way up but was in no rush, so no problem. Fantastic views. The dogs loved it as well. Lunch at the Parrot was excellent, great pub and atmosphere.

An excellent walk with spectacular views. Moderately strenuous in places but worth the climb. Parrot pub is excellent. The best we have found in the area so far...

Did this walk last week and really enjoyed it. The waypoints are excellent and we liked how the writer had put in extras e.g where you can see Leith Hill Tower from. Some steep hills at points but so worth it at the end!

This was a lovely walk with our very energetic dog. Beware, we encountered a field of sheep as we descended Leith Hill and the electrified fencing was blocking the footpath. The Parrot was a great ending to the walk as the food and service was very good, and they welcomed our very dirty dog!
